The desktop background will automatically change to the new Bing image

Split from this thread.

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am writing to express my frustration with a recent update that caused my desktop background to change daily, reverting to Bing images despite my attempts to set a personal wallpaper. This issue significantly disrupts my user experience, as I prefer a consistent background that reflects my personal preferences.

Issue Details:

  • Unwanted Background Changes: Each day, my desktop background automatically changes to a new Bing image.

  • Inability to Retain Personal Settings: When I set my preferred wallpaper, it reverts to the Bing image shortly afterward.

  • Negative Impact on User Experience: This constant change is disruptive and detracts from the personalized experience I expect from my operating system.

I am constantly asked to sign in to my OneDrive, and despite signing in to OneDrive nothing happens, there is no next step to select the wallpaper.

Request for Assistance:

I kindly request guidance on how to disable this automatic background change feature permanently. If this behavior is intentional, I urge the development team to consider the negative impact it has on user experience and to provide an option to opt out of daily background changes in future updates.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response and a resolution to this issue.

Sincerely,

|

Dear TRSB,

Hello! Welcome to the Microsoft Community. I'm glad to be able to assist you.

I split your question from the previous thread. If you have a question, we recommend that you create a new thread to discuss it. If you post in an old thread, few people will notice it, which may result in you not receiving an effective response.

I understand that after a recent update, you are experiencing an issue with your desktop background image changing automatically. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. I understand your feelings and I will do my best to help you.

Right-click on the desktop, select "Personalize", select "Background", and make sure that the "Windows Spotlight" feature is not set. This setting will update your desktop image regularly. In fact, I am using it.

After properly checking the "Windows Spotlight" option, please check the following steps. Bing Wallpaper App may be an application that was automatically installed during the recent update, and it is constantly covering your background.

Uninstall Bing Wallpaper App (if installed):

  • Press Win + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.

  • Look for Bing Wallpaper in the list of installed programs.

  • If found, right-click on it and select Uninstall.

  • Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, please perform a clean boot to rule out any third-party applications and see if the issue persists.

-Clean startup, try to use clean startup, and check whether the problem still appears after eliminating the influence of third-party soft armor and services. If the problem is solved, you can follow the steps of clean startup to find the problematic software.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get you back on track.

If you have any progress, please let me know. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Merry Christmas!

Best Wishes

I had the same problem. I did uninstall the Bing Wallpaper App, which had a date of a week or so ago. It was obviously something automatic with an update. I like downloading a few of the wallpapers to use now and again. I guess I can't do that if I don't reinstall the app and deal with this again.

Hello:

Happy Holidays to you all first of all. Secondly, i tried two of the steps detailed in the response on Dec. 26, 2024. I also tried the option to select screen savers from Microsoft store. It all seems a bit too complicated for novice users who simply want to change screen selections for personal laptops. It almost feels like a Virus or something how my start-up screen changes imagery at will and I have to stop to search now four different times to try to change it. Even the Microsoft store has little to no instructions that I found on how to use the downloads of screen savers. I thought I saved three and then they disappeared into the ether of oblivion on my system. I have no idea where the files are that I selected nor how to use them the CHANGE MY LAPTOP OPENING SCREEN IMAGE. Sorry, but the selections have gone from very nice to not my style.

I am having a delightful time otherwise with my newly gifted Dell Inspiron 15 3520 now that I've spent several hours researching and removing McAfee installed product. All this technological expertise please give me a little more user friendly advice to fix the madness.

In closing, I look forward to an immediate resolution and thank you all in advance for your very attentive, and very prompt resolution to my concern, and have a very, very joyful New Year.

Cordially Signed,

Senior Citizen End User

Thank you for the solution you provided—it worked for me. However, I must mention that resolving this issue was only possible because I understand the process as a computer science engineer. Even then, I found it unnecessarily tedious to go through so many steps just to perform a simple task like changing the desktop wallpaper.

It is quite frustrating that such a minor adjustment took me several hours to figure out. Additionally, I would like to point out that any new update should not alter existing user preferences without prior notice, as this is highly disruptive and, frankly, unethical.

I hope this feedback is taken into consideration to improve future updates.
