Task Manager Not Working After Recent Windows 10 Update

Task Manager Not Working After Recent Windows 10 Update.

Whether running from the Start menu or the control+alt+delete,

all that occurs is that Task Manager icon appears on the task bar but

will expand to the screen when clicked. When right c;licked, the options

that appear are: Task Manger, Pin to Task Bar, and Close Window with only

Pin to Task Bar and Close Window working.

I ran the following scans to no avail:

Method 1:

  1. Press Windows key + X
Click command prompt (Run as administrator)
  2. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press Enter key after each command:
  3. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  4. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter

Method 2:

  1. Press Windows key + X
Click command prompt (Run as administrator).
  2.  Type sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and "/")
  3. Press Enter.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to Right click on the Start Button and select Task Manager and check If you are able to access Task manager. If you are still not able to access task manager then press Windows Key+R from your keyboard and type Task manager on the run command and check if you are able to access it.

Once you are able to access Task manager, follow the below steps and check if it helps:

1. Open Task manager.

2. Click on the Details tab.

3. Now right click on the Explorer.exe process and select End task.

4. Now click on File from top left corner of Task manager.

5. Select Run new task and type explorer.exe and click Ok

Let us know the status of the issue. We will be glad to assist you further.

Thank you.

Right click the task bar...does no task manager option come up?...probably not from what you described...try a PC reset.

or if you still have a system restore point you could try to do a system restore.*john

mine...I'm out-of date.

I can confirm I am seeing exactly the same behavior when I try to start task manager. Task manager windows pops up and then closes as soon as I move mouse over it.  Also disappears after a short wait even if I don't move the mouse to it.

The bad task manager behavior started immediately after updating to Fall Creator's update.

Investigation using the event viewer showed I was getting event 4101
"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
every time the task manager closed.  My laptop has both the Intel HD display and an NVIDIA GT 750M card.  I updated the drivers from the Intel site and it  fixed the task manager problem but am experiencing problems with the NVIDIA GT card now.  Still working to find the correct combination of drivers.

I am also having this problem after upgrading from 7 to 10.  CTRL ALT DEL brings up a screen saying "Microsoft Windows.  The application is not responding.  The program may respond again if you wait.  Do you want to end the process?"  Clicking "End Process" does nothing, I get a spinning blue circle forever until I hold down power button.  Left or Right clicking Start Button brings up the same screen, and Windows Key + R brings up that same screen too.  I haven't had this many problems with Windows since Windows 98, I can't believe Microsoft went back 15 years in progress.

Couple of possibilities.

1) Can you run in windows as long as you don't hit CNTL-ALT-DEL.  If so, take a look in the event viewer about the time of your last failed press of CNTL-ALT-DEL.  In my case I see the message about Windows Operating System being prevented from accessing the graphics hardware.  Right before that is a warning from my secondary NVIDIA card.  Reinstalling the drivers from Dell resolved the problem.  using the Intel HD graphics install from Intel and the NVIDIA drivers from their site will precipitate the problem.

2) Let it spin overnight.  Sometimes windows figures out it is in trouble and I've seen self healing behavior with other problems given time.

3) Try to boot into safe mode and see if you can get to the safe mode cleanly if you cannot run in the standard mode.  You can trying reinstalling drivers here if you cannot in normal mode.
