Switched to a local Windows account, now I can't sign back into my Microsoft account.

I've been unable to sign into my Windows account after switching to a local account.

  • First I go Settings then Accounts then I click on Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.

  • I then go through the Microsoft account login prompts using my Microsoft account: Login Prompt 1.

  • Then I get asked to sign into this computer using my current windows password (which is the password of my Local Account, because that's what I'm currently signed in as): Login Prompt 2.

  • Finally I get an Oops, something went wrong error message with no error code. Then it just asks me to sign in again. Seems like I'm stuck in an endless loop.

I'm running Windows 10.

Hello Shacked77, I'm Quinn, and I'm happy to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a conflict between your local and Microsoft accounts during the sign-in process. Let's explore a few other options that might be simpler and more effective. When you're asked for your password while trying to sign in with your Microsoft account, try leaving the password field blank and pressing Enter. This might work if you didn't set a password for your local account when you switched. Try Netplwiz Utility: This is a Windows tool that can help manage user accounts. You can use it to check if your Microsoft account has administrator privileges, which are sometimes required for switching accounts. Additionally, Check for Windows Updates, outdated system files can sometimes cause conflicts like this. Make sure your Windows 10 is up-to-date.

Please let me know if you need any assistance with these steps or if you have any other questions. I'm here to help!

Hi Quinn, thank you for your help!

I tried leaving the password field blank and that didn't work, it just asks me to enter the password that I set for my local account.

I used Netplwiz and can confirm that my local Microsoft account does have administrator privileges: Netplwiz shows admin privileges.

Additionally, I can confirm that Windows 10 is running the most up to date version: Windows up to date.

I'll add that I'm unable to sign into the Xbox app, the Xbox game bar app, or the Microsoft store, but I can still sign into and access my Microsoft account via the web without issue.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me with this. I'm really at a loss.
