Stop Mobile Hotspot from turning off

I am running windows 10 on a work computer and we don't have wifi in the office. I can turn on my mobile hotspot on my computer to broadcast wifi so my phone can connect and not eat up all my data. Problem is it keeps completely shutting off for some reason. It sometimes stays connected for hours, sometimes it shuts off after 10 minutes. And For clarity, I don't mean my phone disconnects, I mean the actual mobile hotspot on my computer fully shuts off. (notification center button turns grey and everything)

And further, because I know people will bring it up, yes I know generally the term "mobile hotspot" is used in reference to cell phones letting wifi devices connect to them, but the actual option in the computer is called "mobile hotspot" so hopefully we can bypass THAT discussion!

Thank you if anyone can help.

Hi WonderingAJ,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

To better assist you in analyzing the phenomenon, we would like to confirm some information with you.

  • What is your system version? We can type winver in the search box to get detailed system version information.

  • Waht is your hardware information? We can type msinfo32 in the search box to get detailed hardware information.

  • In addition to the mobile hotspot function, are other functions similarly grayed out and disabled?

  • Did any of your other devices still use the Mobile Hotspot feature before it was grayed out?

  • Did the problem appear out of the blue? Have some updates such as system updates, driver updates, and application updates been installed on the device before the problem occurred? Or some configuration parameter was modified?

  • You mentioned this is a work computer, is it domain joined?

This phenomenon is very strange. According to the information you provided, the mobile hotspot function can work normally.

But we don't know what happened behind this, causing the feature to turn off after a certain time.

This is somewhat difficult to troubleshoot and analyze. Providing timely and definitive solutions is very challenging.

  • It is possible that some power management parameters affect the function code of the mobile hotspot.

  • If the device is in a domain environment, it may be controlled by certain policies, which may induce this phenomenon.

For verification purposes, we sincerely invite you to perform some tests and welcome your feedback on the results at any time.

Observe before and after the mobile hotspot function is grayed out.

  • Check the status change of the service of the mobile hotspot function, and observe the status of the Windows Mobile Hotspot Service before and after the function is grayed out.

  • We can type service in the search box, run it and find Windows Mobile Hotspot Service. Status will be listed.

Observe how often the problem occurs in safe mode.

  • Safe Mode starts the device with limited drivers and services, which eliminates most extra distractions.

  • Observing the occurrence frequency of the problem in safe mode helps to judge and analyze the factors associated with the problem.

Your patience and cooperation are highly appreciated.

If you have any other supplementary information on this issue, please feel free to let us know.

Hi there, thanks for the help!

So to answer your questions:

Win Version is: Windows 10 V 22h2 Build 19045.2965 10 Enterprise 10.0.19045 Build 19045

Hardware information: Well you're going to have to be way more specific because there is a huge amount of hardware information there, but the system is a Dell Latitude 7430

Yes, all the buttons in the notification centre are greyed out because they're all turned off. When they're on they turn blue, when they're off they turn grey. They all turn on and off, but they're grey when turned off. Nothing is disabled.

It's a work computer so I only just started working here, the phone is the only thing I've ever had connected.

I have no way of knowing if it appeared out of the blue because I only started working here, it has always been this way ever since I found out that there was a hotspot function.

I have no idea what domain joined means, so I have no idea if it is or not

"Check the status change of the service of the mobile hotspot function, and observe the status of the Windows Mobile Hotspot Service before and after the function is grayed out." I have absolutely no idea what you're saying with this. When I turn it on, I can connect with my phone. When I see that the phone suddenly has switched to data, I open up the notification centre on my computer to see that the mobile hotspot has shut off. This is all the information I have to give.

all the status says on the Service app is "Running" when I turn it on and when I turn it off the service app still says "Running"

I don't have admin access when I try to open it in safe mode, it asks for a password which I don't have.

Even if I could, as I said the frequency fluctuates wildly, It can stay connected for hours without issue or shut off after 10 minutes. It is a work computer and I unfortunately can't dedicate hours of my day running in safe mode to see if it does or does not disconnect, this thing is slow enough running normally!

If you need any more detailed information I will be happy to get it, just tell me how and (like I mentioned above with the hardware info) be very specific in exactly what you're looking for. Thank you very much for your help!

Hi WonderingAJ,

Go to the Mobile Hotspot Settings and make sure the Energy Saver option is disabled.

Thank you very much, I went into the settings to check and the Power Saving option is switched to off. I even switched it on and then back off just now just in case there was some error to reset. I will keep an eye on my device to see if it still disconnects.

When connecting to Windows 10 mobile hotspot keep your phone powered by electrical power source, avoid using it by battery power.

Go to Device Manager, right click WiFi adapter > Properties > Power Management tab, uncheck the checkbox: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Post the exact model of your wireless adapter.

What is the Firewall / Antivirus in use on the computer?

There isn't a Wifi Adapter in that chain exactly, so hopefully I am going to the right place. Anyway, I went to

Device Manager > Network Adapters > Intel Wifi as well as Mircosoft Wifi Direct (those were the only two things that had wifi in the name)

and when I go into properties on both devices the only tabs I have visible are General, Driver, Details, Events and Resources. No Power Management tab.

Your wireless network card should be Intel but if you are not sure, post a screenshot so we can understand each other better.

I repeat the question: What is the Firewall / Antivirus in use on the PC?

And I repeat, it's a work computer. I have no idea what the firewall/antivirus is. I also definitely can't post a screenshot of the setup. But as noted above, the Intel wifi that I was able to check did not have the Power management tab, the only tabs I have visible are General, Driver, Details, Events and Resources

There are hundreds of Intel wireless adapters out there.

I'm sorry but if you can't provide more information, I don't have the ability to help you further. Contact your company's network administrator or IT manager.
