Steam and XBox games either will not start or terminate shortly after start up, why is this?

A while back I purchased a new PC with Windows 11 and loaded Steam to play the games I've been using for years (e.g. Total War: Empire, Civilization V, VI, ...) These games ran for a few minutes than the fan would kick into high gear and the game would freeze and sometimes it would just terminate with out an error. Looked online to possible solutions with no luck. Thinking it might be associated with Steam gaming service, I loaded XBox which I play MS Solitaire with out issue and purchased Age of Empires. This to would run for a few minutes and then terminate without an error code of any kind.

After a couple months of trying to find a solution, I decided to reinstall Windows 11 with the option to delete all files and reinstall Windows 11.

I installed Steam and now Total War: Empire will not even start. I also, installed XBox again and Age of Empires starts but terminates with in a minute or so. So, now it is worse than the first Windows 11 setup. I purchased the new PC to get more memory and a better graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER). I have verified the latest drivers and Windows is up to date. Oh I also had a Blue Screen of death last night.

Can someone please guide me to what I am missing?

Thank you in advance!

Hello,Brian Sirko2

Welcome to posting in the Microsoft Community.

Thank you for describing the problems you encountered in detail, and I can sense that you spent a lot of time and effort in trying to solve them. It's really frustrating to encounter this kind of situation, especially when you've bought a new computer and can't run the game properly. Please don't worry too much though, there are a few things we can do to troubleshoot and try to get to the root of the problem.

First of all, according to your description, the game will terminate after running for a while while the fan is running at high speed, which may be related to excessive hardware load or power management settings. I've encountered a similar situation before, and at that time, I found that the problem was related to unstable power supply, so I suggest you try the following actions:

  1. Ensure that the device is plugged into a power source: when testing games, try to connect your computer to a power adapter rather than relying on battery power. This will ensure that the hardware gets enough power support under high load.

  2. Adjust power performance settings: Go to “Settings” -> “System” -> “Power and Battery” in Windows, and adjust the power mode to “Optimal Performance”. “This will prevent the system from limiting the performance of your hardware in order to save energy.

Secondly, you mentioned that the game flashes back or even blue screens, which may indicate that the problem is not just the game itself, but may also involve the system or hardware level. The blue screen issue is especially important to pay attention to because it is usually the system's reaction when it detects a serious error. It is recommended that you collect blue screen logs in order to analyze the cause more accurately:

  • Steps to get the error log: Left-click on “Start” - “Settings” - Left menu bar click on “System “ - “System Information” - “Advanced System Settings” - “Startup and Repair “Settings” in the ‘Startup and Repair’ option box - Adjust the ‘Write Error Message’ to ‘Memory Dump’. - Click “OK”, then when the BSOD error occurs again, the system will automatically collect the error message and store it in the Minidump folder under the C drive, and you can upload this file to the cloud to share with me.

Going through the above steps will provide us with some tips on how you can share more information with me and I will investigate this further for you. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Thanks for your feedback.

Thank you for picking up this thread.

I made the changed the "Power Mode" to "Best Performance" as suggested.

I also updated the "System failure - Write debugging information" to "Complete memory dump" closet option I could find.

Two clarification points; first the BSOD all occurred while I was away from the PC and the games were not running. Second after I reinstalled windows the Steam games do start, in fact the game does not even show in Task Manager. The Steam games were the ones causing the fan to kick into high gear and now that they will not start there's no fan acceleration.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks

Brian
