Start Menu button and Taskbar are not functional after October Windows 10 Update

As title says it. I cannot access Start Menu, Search, Clock and Calendar settings from the Taskbar.

There are plenty of possible fixes, but non of them work, including Powershell commands and regedit edits.

I had uninstalled the October's Cumulative Update, but it didn't fix the problem either.

I guess it will be fixed with the next update on Tuesday. But I need my PC for work and I cannot not use it normally for the whole week (good thing I didn't update right away). Bravo, Microsoft.

I saw that this maybe connected to Cortana or MS Office. The thing is, I don't use them, the MS Office and Cortana are not installed on my PC. And still I have this problem.

P.S. Seeing how Microsoft doesn't bother to fix the dread "Oops, something went wrong" logging in/posting issue on their OWN forums for literally YEARS I have little hope for any real solution for anything.

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

If the usual PowerShell commands you find online did not solve this and neither did uninstalling that update, then the best option is to perform an in-place repair with the Windows 10 ISO, that should stabilize your Windows installation.

Please Note, this is not re-installing Windows, follow the steps, this is then just an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), then choose ISO, not USB

When the ISO file completes downloading

Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the upgrade option.

This is quite radical solution for something that should be so simple.

I guess Start services should be reinstalled somehow, along with whatever taskbar services.

I agree ISO should be able to fix this. I hoped it won't be necessary.

If the PowerShell commands to reset the Start and Taskbar services are not resolving this for you, then the ISO is really the best method.

I waited till Update Tuesday in hopes the updates will solve this. But they didn't. Moreover, while waiting I also discovered that Microsoft Store cannot be launched.

I also tried the ISO Upgrade option. But it's useless, as it won't let me leave my files and settings.
