Hi,
1) To create a Windows 8 bootable disk, you may refer to the article: “How to create installation media for a PC refresh or reset” from this link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
After creating the installation media, you may try resetting the computer by following the instructions given in the article “Restore your PC to an earlier point in time” from this link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
Important: When you reset the computer, all of your personal files will be deleted and your settings will be reset. Any apps the came with your PC will be reinstalled, but all other apps will be removed.---Rajesh Govind, Microsoft Support Engineer---

Create a USB Recovery Drive.
"Windows 8.1 includes a built-in tool to create a USB recovery drive. Windows will let you know how big the recovery partition is, and you'll need a USB flash drive at least that big.
This is now your Windows 8.1 recovery drive, and you'll need it if you ever need to refresh or reset your PC. Keep it in a safe place and don't use it to store other files or data."

I did this but the USB recovery drive it created was invalid when I tried to use it. All I want to do is completely restore the Surface Pro back to its factory condition but I can't. It wants me to use a disk that I don't have and the USB recovery drive it created for me isn't valid for doing it. None of the restore options seem to work

Surface Pro - Boot
Start from a bootable USB device when Surface is off
Step 1: | Attach a bootable USB device to the USB port. |
Step 2: | Press and hold the volume-down (–) rocker. |
Step 3: | Press and release the power button. |
Step 4: | When the Surface logo appears, release the volume rocker. Surface will start the software on your USB device. |
