[SOLVED] Xbox game bar gallery error - captures not showing up

Hi, i'm getting this error whenever I use the game bar gallery to view my recordings:
"There was a problem trying to get your captures. Try again in a bit"

Basically the Gallery is unusable for me.

My current alternative is:

  1. Go to the Gamebar settings (click gear icon)
  2. Under General, click on Edit more preferences in Windows Settings
  3. Select the Capture category
  4. Then click on Open folder button
  5. This opens up the default Temp folder. I just arrange the files by date to find the latest mp4 file capture.

I do wish I could get the gallery to work so that I would have to look for the capture on my temp folder manually everytime :(

If that doesn't help then re-register Xbox Game bar from Option 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...

And if that doesn't help then uninstall Game Bar in App Settings above, restart PC, reinstall Game Bar from Microsoft Store Settings > My Library.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thank you Greg, I'll try and follow the links you suggested.
Although a couple of them I seem to have already visited because of the purple color (instead of blue) link.

In addition, before I posted here, I did try and search for solutions first. But oddly enough, even searching for the exact keywords "There was a problem trying to get your captures. Try again in a bit", there were no results. That's why I posted :)

I did try following solutions from pages that I checked that made sense, but to no avail.. so far.

Lastly, the last troubleshooting I tried was to use the Repair and Reset functions for the app. It still didn't resolve the issue.

Here are the results from the pages you suggested:
1. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028582/windows-10-fix-problems-with-game-bar
> Win+G was never problem. I can see the game bar menus. I just don't see the recorded videos in the gallery window.

2. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/cant-record-right-now-theres-nothing-record
> It contains a couple topics. I followed #3 to delete some registry keys. and #4 to reset it (which i already did). I restarted my machine but still no luck.
> lastly I followed #6 and #7 to uninstall and reinstall the app using Powershell. Restarting my computer in between. After launching the gamebar, the gallery still has the same error. Note that I tried Win+G after doing the uninstall procedure to confirm that it was indeed uninstalled.

3. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/cant-record-right-now-theres-nothing-record

> Also tried uninstalling again using Powershell, but this time, I reinstalled it via Windows Store. Still got the same gallery error.
> Other ones in there, either I did already, or was not relevant.

If that doesn't help then Reset Game Bar in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Xbox Game bar > Advanced Options.

If that doesn't help then re-register Xbox Game bar from Option 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...
> also already did this.. reinstalled  and re-registered ALL Windows apps. I even checked the registry keys i deleted earlier on option #2, they were properly restored. no luck.
> I also tried uninstalling just the gamebar app again, using the command line from the site, but it is erroring out.

And if that doesn't help then uninstall Game Bar in App Settings above, restart PC, reinstall Game Bar from Microsoft Store Settings > My Library.

What I did notice that is kinda odd is that some websites are saying that the captured files should be in a Captures folder.

Yet what i'm seeing on my end is the Temp folder instead.

If i click on the "How to save to a different folder" link, the closest info I found related to it is under the Saving Captures.

But it simply says that I could move the folder elsewhere via File Explorer.
Which would not make sense in this case, because it currently points to my Temp folder XD

Maybe if there's a way to change that path, it may resolve my Game Bar gallery issue.

OK, I finally found a fix! Seems like it is indeed related to the Captures folder being set to the temp drive.
Here's a link where I found the solution.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/xba_wowpc-xba_gowgb/game-bar-captures-folder-missing/f4fcb2a6-c1bc-4624-ad8a-771aa2e3ea05

Summary of steps:

  1. Open Regedit
  2. Go to this Key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  3. Replace the value with this:%USERPROFILE%\Videos\Captures
  4. Close registry and restart PC.
  5. After restarting, I opened up the game bar (Win+G), and now i don't have the error any more.

I believed this happened because I changed some drives not too long ago. The Game bar gallery / Captures folder was pointing to an old location that is not available anymore. Thus it resorted to fallback to the Temp folder for the captures.

I suppose in the future, the Game Bar should be able to internally detect if the assigned path is already invalid, and suggest a proper path for the user.

I think the issue is now considered resolved ^_^
Thank you Greg for initiating the replies to start helping me out.

Cheers!
