Solved ━ Why Can't I Change My Default Web Browser? (Windows 11 22H2)

I'm currently using the latest window's version 22H2. This is my first time having this issue, and I've been trying to find and search hoping there's someone have the same issue as me and have the solution to fix it, but I can't seem to find one.

The only closest thing I could find is this forum from 2017, but there's no further solution in my problem.

Why Can't I Change Default Web Browser?

I have 3 web browsers installed (Microsoft Edge, Chrome, & Brave), and deciding to finally switch browsers from chrome to brave. Brave have been offering me to make brave as my default browser in it's settings, which I click for convenience.

After clicking it, it brings me to list of default apps that is shown there. I just have to find the web browser that I want to use, and change it as my default browser, which is brave. It gave me the set of default file types and link types that I could change, especially the HTTPS and HTTP. It was defaulted as Chrome but I wanted to change it to Brave. I did that, and both of my HTTPS and HTTP was not able to change web browser instantly as I expected. This was also affected to my .htm and .html.

It did list the list of web browsers I have. I thought It only doesn't work with brave, but apparently it doesn't work with all my web browsers, with HTTPS, HTTP, .htm and .html. The others work, but those 4 specific types that I was not able to change at all.

I tried reseting all the default apps in the settings, but it doesn't seem to work, either. It only made the chrome as a default browser gone, but I'm still not able to change my default browser at all.

I did brave again.

even tried chrome.

and even tried edge.

Nothing worked.

I tried restarting my laptop, and it's brings back the chrome as a default web browser, and If I reset it again, It will still not work. So whenever I open links I just do it manually, even if I set the opening as always. It still doesn't work and it will not be able to change the web browser in the settings at all. It does it's job to open the specific web browser that I want to use, but I would prefer to be able to do one click to bring me to the site I wanted to see and go.

I did find other way to be able to fix it, I have to reset my whole laptop, which is wiping all my files and data, but I don't want to risk just yet. I hope this is just a bug that I could fix without reseting everything, especially my chrome has all my passwords that I have to use, and I don't want to lose it.

I appreciate the help that I will get to resolve this issue, because this is bothering me lately, this issue just happen yesterday (February 11, 2023) and I didn't change anything in my settings or my laptop that might affect with my default browser issue.

Answer

The permission entries are correct, yet the Default Apps encounters an Access is Denied error when writing the file associations for http/https/htm/html. This is strange. Please see if the problem happens during a clean boot. Check out the clean boot guide from Microsoft.

Alternately, download SetUserFTA and create separate batch files for each browser.

To set Chrome as the default, open Notepad and paste these lines:

D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe http ChromeHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe https ChromeHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe .htm ChromeHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe .html ChromeHTML

(Assuming SetUserFTA.exe is saved to D:\Tools folder.)

Save the file as "chrome.bat".

Double-clicking Chrome.bat will set Chrome as the default.

For Brave:

D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe http BraveHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe https BraveHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe .htm BraveHTML
D:\tools\SetUserFTA.exe .html BraveHTML

Likewise, create separate batch files for other browsers using the examples here.
