Snipping tool shortcut stops working.

Hi friends!

I absolutely love using the windows+shift+s shortcut to take quick screenshots of things, but after a while the shortcut completely stops working, I've checked multiple things to try fix it but the only thing that works is uninstalling and reinstalling it. It's getting quite annoying having to constantly do this to fix it. My notifications for the app are on, and the clipboard history is also on. I've also tried restarting the app through the apps and features settings. But the only thing that works is uninstalling. Does anyone else know anything that could fix this?

My name is Cindy. I am sorry you are having this problem. I know it is really frustrating. I will do my best to help you with this problem.

Here are a few things you can try to fix this problem.

Try to Run the troubleshooter

Select the Start button, select Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, and Select Windows Store apps > Run the troubleshooter.


Repair the tool

Go to Settings and selecting "Apps and Features".
Select "Snip and Sketch" from the list.
Click on Advanced options button
Click on the Repair Button
Click the Reset.

Here are the instructions on how to the app again.

Open Microsoft Store
Typing Snipping in the search.
Select app.
Download it.

Restart your Computer.

I did yes, when I ran the trouble shooter it came back that there was no issues.

I had already tried the repair and reset but it hadn't changed anything with the shortcut not working.

And reinstalling the app is the only thing that works, but having to do this constantly isn't the best solution

Hi All,

I also have this problem. Restarting the computer can also solve the problem, but that doesn't resolve the root issue. It is happening quite frequently recently, I cannot identify what is triggering the issue. Tried to manually open the Snip and Sketch application, and press the new button but it doesn't work as well.

After all sorts of futile efforts, I reset my PC

I tried the Settings/App, selected Snipping Tool. Clicked on Repair..no go. Clicked on Reset..no go.


I got a notification on right side of screen from Snipping Tool, clicked on it, brings up menu, another click will save to destination folder. Almost there!

Went to Microsoft Store, clicked on Update. Opened it. Whoala..it works! I.e.

shift-s-Windows gets into Snipping Tool, I select "rectangle"..screen goes black, image is stored in Screenshots folder

Try switching to fullscreen mode. It will copy the whole screen and show up in the snipping tool window, where you can continue editing it. Not ideal but a workaound at least.

Support here is quite useless most of the time.

I've been having this problem too where the shortcut just stops working for no reason.

Open taks manager search for the "Screen Snipping" process and kill it. That thing has been buggy for a long time.
