Snap Assist Issue (required to press keyboard shortcut twice)

I have the Windows 10, version 1909 with the latest update installed (OS Build 18363.752).

I have had this issue related to the 'Snap windows' feature for a while:

Under Settings > System > Multitasking, I have enabled the 'Snap windows' feature with all the options checked.

I often use the 'Windows_Key + Arrow_Key' keyboard shortcut to snap the active window; however, most of the time, I have to press this shortcut twice to snap the window. By dragging the window, I have no issue. This issue only happens when I use the keyboard shortcut.

The first time I press this shortcut, it does move the active window to the direction indicated by the Arrow_Key, but a small upper portion of the title bar of the active window is cut by the display's upper boundary, and it does not show the other windows that I can snap next to it.

The second time that I press the shortcut, it then properly snaps the active window (no more cutting title bar) and shows the other windows that I can snap next to it.

I do want to add the fact that I use a multi-display setup.

Here are the screenshots that better describes my situation:

  • After pressing the keyboard shortcut for the first time:

After pressing the keyboard shortcut for the second time:

Please, any help would be appreciated. The previously recommended solutions of making sure that the keyboard is clean and updating drivers for keyboard and graphics card doesn't do anything.

The issue affects most apps, such as google chrome, native windows apps (such as settings), and edge. However, it doesn't appear to affect Microsoft Office (which further complicates the situation, as always pressing the shortcut twice can't even be a temporary/consistent makeshift solution).

Good day, I am Florentino, a windows 10 user and custom Computer builder for over a decade, I would be happy to help troubleshoot this with you.

This makse me think that maybe your keyboard driver is not forwarding the keys you press. It seems like maybe your keyboard isn't registering.

You also may have some snap settings that need adjustment.
Last of all, there is a possibility of filter keys interferring with your intended actions.

Last of all there may be filters interferring, or a issue with how the updated affected your keyboard driver.

I am sure you probably already checked these things, however you might try uninstalling your keyboard driver, and pluging the keyboard in another usb slot i know this sounds silly but it may help reset the filters that are applied to your keyboard and reinstall your keyboard

Have a great day!

Sincerely,
Florentino DeLaguna

I am using the keyboard on the laptop, and the problem still persists. I have tried reinstalling drivers to no avail.

I'm confused by your statement "your keyboard driver is not forwarding the keys you press." The keys I press are certainly being forwarded, and the window *almost* snaps as it should, but the errors that I mentioned in my original post still persist. If my keyboard driver isn't forwarding the keys I press, the window wouldn't snap at all, would it?

Additionally, the fact that the issue applies to some programs (such as google chrome) but not other (such as Microsoft office) further cements that it is not a hardware issue.

Good day so when I say its not forwarding the keys, what i mean is that it is filting how your input is being used. In computers there are differen't filters and other divers, and registry entries that modify and ajust how your input and other devices work.

So this makes me wonder if one of those filters is taking your key input and hooking it the first time you press it but letting it pass the second. Possibly something that was enacted/changed with the windows update.

So I a agree with you I don't think it is a hardware issue. (as far as physically a issue)

Hi RB. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

I don't think it's a keyboard issue, but you can test this with another keyboard or with the on-screen Keyboard at Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.

More likely it's a display issue or system glitch, so let's check those out next:

1) Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

2) Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

3) If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, and is also the most stable method to advance to the latest version. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Greg,
I appreciate your support. Below are your suggestions that I have tried, to no avail:
  1. Tried the on-screen keyboard
  2. Updated the display driver, BIOS firmware driver, and used the Lenovo System Update to check that all drivers are updated
  3. Uninstalled my graphics (Intel(R) HD Graphics 520) and my monitor (Wide viewing angle & High density FlexView Display 2560x1440 as well as Generic PnP Monitor) before restarting computer
  4. Updated monitors/graphics to older versions of the driver
  5. Adjusted screen resolution/zoom
  6. Tested steps 4, 7, 10, and 16 from the guide you mentioned
  7. Complete a repair install using the Media Creation Tool

The problem still persists. What steps would you recommend taking next?

Does it still snap manually but not with arrow keys?

Did you run the System File Checker from Step 10 of the checklist here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki... ? Did it find broken system files and fix them?

Have you tried holding (not just pressing) the Windows key before tapping arrow keys?

Yes, if I drag it manually to the edge of the screen then it will snap properly; however, if I use the arrow keys, the first press of the shortcut doesn't quite snap it properly.

I ran the system file checker and it didn't find any broken files (it mentioned something about the integrity not having broken or something of that sort).

Holding the Windows key rather than tapping it still produces the error.

I've tried the following solutions from those forum posts:

  1. Zooming in and zooming out
  2. Running diagnostics (SFC/DSIM)
  3. Restarting explorer.exe

Most of them were having issues with the shortcut itself, not the kind of issue I'm having where the shortcut needs to be pressed twice. The only workaround that I still need to try is starting my PC in safe mode.

From those forums, the workaround of clicking Win + Down before clicking Win + Left or Win + Right was mentioned, and this works fine. I would prefer to fix the underlying issue, however.

If it works in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf... then that often means the problem is with a driver.

Have you tried uninstalling the keyboard driver in Device Manager to reinstall it?

Also try turning on and off filter keys to see if that helps:

Booting in safe mode didn't get rid of the problem, nor did any of the solutions mentioned in those articles or uninstalling my keyboard.

Do you think there's any significance to the fact that the shortcut works properly for native windows programs (such as Microsoft office, edge, control panel, etc) but not others (such as google chrome, trello, IDLE, etc)? I feel like this must be at the core of the issue.
