Service Host App has stopped working

Am using Windows 8, in Windows 7 mode.

When I click the 'home' icon on the tool bar to take me to 'start menu' it comes up with the message:

"Service Host App has stopped working"

Still happening after upgrades and reboots, so currently unable to select the Home/Start Menu at all!

Can anyone help with this one please?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

With the issue description, I understand that while clicking on the start button you get an error “Service Host App has stopped working” on your Windows 8 machine. I will certainly help you in getting this issue fixed.

This issue might occur due to any third party software conflict or system file corruption. Let’s follow below mentioned steps and check if that helps:

Method 1:

Step 1: Safe Mode

Try to boot the computer in Safe Mode by following below Microsoft article because Safe mode is a diagnostic mode that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. This will help us in identifying whether the problem is triggered because of some third party application or some conflicting hardware drivers.

Step 2: Clean Boot

If the issue does not appear in Safe mode then, try to do Clean Boot by following steps provided in below Microsoft article. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows.

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section ‘How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting’.

Try method 2, if the issue persist

Method 2: Run SFC Scan

You may also try performing a SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Also, I would suggest you to upgrade the windows from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 operating system because Windows 8 support is now ended.

Hope this information is helpful. Please write back to us if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

Regards

Neha
