Server 2003 activation

Ok, here's the deal. A customer server has died and we virtualised their server 2003 in order to keep them running with as little downtime as possible. After the virtualisation, Windows naturally asked for activation, which doesn't seem to be possible. Over the internet it fails, so I presume the licence servers have been turned off. Calling the phone activation hotline, the automated system fails and connects me to a "customer service" representative, who then tells me that the system is not supported and they cannot give me a verification code. Now, I have a problem.

I am aware that 2003 is a stone old system and is long out of support but it cannot be that I can't activate it. I have a customer who is dead in the water in 2 days unless I come up with a solution.

I've been told twice that I should come to this site and Microsoft technicians will be able to help me but reading what's going on here, I am not sure this really is an option.

So please Microsoft technicians, help me. MS insists on activation, so make it possible. Give me a tool that sorts it, I don't care, just please help.

Cheers

Hi

I am also trying to activate Microsoft Dynamics RMS , which is out of support.

I think they have switched the activation servers off.

This is a headache , because there are many clients running legacy systems.

Hopefully we can get an answer from Microsoft.

Kind Regards

Wrong Community for Servers.

And we don't work for Microsoft; we are mainly volunteers here.

Ask in a later Server forum where I'm sending you to.

Well, I was referred to this site by two "customer service" reps after calling the activation phone number. Both were adamant that this is the place to get help and that "our technicians there will be able to help you".

So in essence, as usual, these people work of a script, can't think from 12 to midday and just rattle of nonsense, regardless whether it is applicable or not.

If MS is unwilling to activate those old bits of software, then they should release a patch which gets rid of the activation requirement. This is an impossible situation they're putting people into. Users have a valid licence for a software but can't use it because Microsoft is unwilling/unable to get things fixed.

So I see Microsoft's customer service is of the same quality as their software is.

They do work off a script.

They are all outsourced contractor employees.

As an example when XP and later Vista support ended Microsoft said they would always support Activation for any problems with them.

They pulled the links and these so-called "technicians" refer them to us here to activate it for them.

Microsoft is the one who says yay or nay to activation, not any of us that are left here and a lot of us have bailed out..

As I said we don't work for Microsoft. We are fellow computer users who come here in our own free time to help others for free and a few of us have been doing it for years.

This is the advice I give them in XP now:

When Microsoft ended support for XP, they were quick to  say we will continue to re-activate XP if you have to reinstall blah, blah, blah.

But over the last few years they have dodged the issue and deleted the links about this.

Contact them by one of these methods and keep contacting them until they do.

Thanks Bill.

I've actually been able to get it activated after searching the depths of the Internet. It took two days to filter the good information from the bad.

FYI, there are two tick boxes in the internet settings called "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" and "Check for server certificate revocation". Untick both, reboot the machine et voila, activation works. Figured that one out after I extended the grace period from the remaining day to 30 days to buy myself some time. I was tempted to run this extension as a scheduled task every 29 days.

I don't think I envy you guys in light of all this. You have to put up with grumpy people like me who get sent here on a wild goose chase.

Cheers also from Qld
