Sending sms to a particular contact PhoneLink sends it to a group

I am using Windows 11 and a Samsung S22 Ultra with all software up to date.

With one particular contact when I send an SMS (either from the phone or PhoneLink on Windows) it automatically adds three other contacts and makes it a group message. (I had used this group for a conversation once before).

I can message any of the other 3 contacts without PhoneLink creating a group.

I have disconnected Link to Windows numerous times.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled PhoneLink through PowerShell using John Dev's instructions in the Windows Community.

Hello GH_YSA and welcome to the Microsoft Community!

Thank you for your feedback, you have had a group chat with three people, so it is possible that PhoneLink or the messaging app on your phone remembers the group, causing subsequent messages to be sent automatically selecting the group instead of the individual. This is commonly seen in the history of the messaging app.

You can try the following to see if it helps your problem

1) Clear the message history and group data on your phone

a. Delete group chat history on your phone

1. Open the Messages app on your phone (e.g. Samsung Messages or Google Messages) > Find the group conversation.

2. Press and hold the group > select Delete or Exit group (some apps support this feature).

3. Ensure that the group conversation is completely removed from the message list.

b. Clearing the Messages app cache and data

1. Go to Settings > Applications > select the default messaging app (for example, Messages) > Storage > tap Clear cache and Clear data.

Note: This operation will delete the local message records, so please back up important information in advance.

c. Check for contact merging issues

Go to the Contacts application on your phone → Check if there are duplicate entries or abnormal groups in the three contacts.

If there are duplicate contacts, merge or delete the duplicate entries.

2) Reset PhoneLink's associated data

a. Thoroughly uninstall PhoneLink and clean up the residual data

1. After uninstalling PhoneLink on Windows, manually delete the following folders:

C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.YourPhone_8wekyb3d8bbwe

(You need to enter the path directly in the address bar of File Explorer and enable Show Hidden Files)

2. Reinstall PhoneLink from Microsoft Store after restarting your computer.

b. Re-pair your phone and computer

Completely exit the Link to Windows feature on both your phone and computer:

For phone: Settings > Connected devices > Link to Windows > Unpair.

PC: Open PhoneLink > Settings > Disconnect device.

Restart your phone and computer and re-pair your devices.

We look forward to hearing from you again!
