Search can't find installed apps

Hi,

just reinstalled the PC. It's a clean install and every updates are installed.

The windows search can't find any app I installed but the apps show up in the start menu and the indexing of start menu is on (by default). So i can find them manually in the start menu and run by clicking on them. But when i type their names, no matches.

The search can find every pre-installed app like Skype, Calculator etc but can't find any of my installs.

I tried to add the program files folder manually and rebuild the index without success.

Maybe it worth a mention that i disabled everything in the settings which sends any data to anywhere but i guess it shouldn't stop windows finding local apps. After these settings i started to install my own apps so it might have something to do with it.

  1. Type troubleshooting in the search box on taskbar.
  2. Click Troubleshooting in the search results.
  3. Click View all and then click Search and Indexing troubleshooter.

Thanks but i just found the cause of this.

Settings/Privacy/Background apps

It was a tricky one because i had to restart the PC after changing states to observe any effect and because there isn't any indication of this behavior on that page. It might be a bug.

lumpen808,

Can you explain what you did here? What did you change in "Background apps" to fix this issue?

Just turn it on. You can turn off all the listed apps then. That is why i think it's a bug but it works.

There appears to be a broader search issue with this. For example, I used to be able to search for the "Region" section of the Control Panel where you can adjust the Region Format, Long Date, Short Date, etc. Now if you try and search for this, you only get things like: "Region & Language Settings" or "Change your country or region". Try the same thing with "Programs" (which used to locate Programs & Features). You will only get "Apps & Features" which is completely different.

In short, "Control Panel" items do not appear to be showing up in the search results any more, making it more tedious to access these sections of the PC.

Hello,

It is possible that the search issue is caused by a software conflict. We'd like to know more about your concern. Please answer the following questions:

  • When did the issue start?
  • Are you getting any error message?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
  • What is the current version and build number of your Windows 10 PC?

Click the Start button, type About your PC, and then press Enter to find out the version and build number of your Windows 10 PC. To isolate which app might be causing the issue, we suggest performing a clean boot. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 10.

We'll be waiting for your response.

Hello,

This started happening after the last major update. I am running the version below:

Windows 10 Pro Version 1703 OS Build 15063.483

Additionally, everyone with this same version in my office has the same problem. I am not getting any error message, I simply no longer receive the search results that used to appear, i.e. Region (by simply typing the word 'region'into the search). So the image on the left is what shows up in "Search" when I search for "Region". The "Region" window on the right is what _used_ to show up in results but no longer does (nor does any other item in the Control panel). The systems involved have been rebooted several times since the problem began. Nothing has been done to resolve per se, aside from checking to ensure I was not applying any weird Filters to my search results, etc.

I have the same issue as Pyradius but with printers. If I searched "printers" I used to get devices and printers as an option, the only result now is Printers & scanners. This has only occured since the creater update.
