"Save As" Not responding - A Solution

I was having trouble with the "save as" function in Chrome, especially with PDF files. I would try to save them, the save box would open, it would say "working on it", but it would eventually show "not responding." I've spent several hours trying all of the different fixes on this forum. None worked.

However, I tried something that finally worked and wanted to share with others if they are having the same problem. I went into settings, system, scroll down to troubleshoot. Then I selected the "other troublethooters" option. Scroll down to "Program Compatibility Troubleshooter." When the selections popped up, I chose "Google Chrome." After the program ran, it asks you to check if it solves the problem. It did for me! Windows was not compatible with Chrome.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thank you for posting this. I have had the same problem not only in Google Chrome but for my scan program, HP Smart. Sometimes I don't get the error message, but more frequently I do. I have had this problem for over a year and none of the solutions currently posted online have worked. I need to download pdf documents for my business and personal files. It would be nice for someone to actually figure out what is going on.

Go to Chrome Settings, Downloads, then turn off "Ask where to save each file before downloading"

Thank you Payamrastogi. I will try this seemingly unrelated change in Settings. As I mentioned, this does not happen everytime. Also, I have tried using Edge to download important documents when Chrome fails me in this manner. After using the Edge download function, Chrome download appears to operate normally, until it doesn't.

After working with the suggested change for over a week, I can definitively say, It does not work.

Bank statements, medical records, online purchases, personal and business records: All the information online about me and my online activity are falling victim to this error.

I cannot convey enough that this "Save As" error message is causing major disruptions each time that it occurs and preventing me from organizing and cataloging the most important events in my life.

Can you even tell me if this is a Chrome or Microsoft problem?

To recap:

User selects Ctrl-P or clicks on print or floppy disc (save) icon

Returns error: Save As (Not Responding)

User clicks X in upper right of open Save As window

Error Message, "Google Chrome is not responding, If you close the program you might lose information"

User options are "Close the program" or "Wait for the program to respond"

User selects "Close the program"

Gas guage shows blue line increasing from left to right and displays error report, "Google Chrome is not responding Hang on while Windows reports the problem to Microsoft..."

Hey Oldan,

I was advised to download and install Chrome Canary. It's a developer version of Chrome that seems to have solved most of the issues I was having. I don't know what is different about it. I suspect that regular Chrome is having some adverse blocking affect on the printing ports assignment that happens between Chrome and Microsoft. Hope this helps.

I have Windows 10 home. I had this problem for a long time (notepad would not save, getting 'working on it messages', folders or programs hanging or very slow to open) I tried several 'solutions' but no luck.

I have finally fixed it. I downloaded the free version of 'Advanced Systemcare' and ran a scan and fix.

The problems immediately disappeared and have so far not returned. (two weeks now)

Hope that is helpful to any with the same problem.

Yes! Thanks, I have had this problem for a long time, especially when Windows updated. Now I know where to go. Thanks Microsoft for trying to control everything their way. Microsoft is not 'user friendly', just another control freak.
