SAmsung 970 Evo plus 1TB drivers and software.

I have a HP Pavilion X360 convertible 15"

The laptop came with a 1TB 5400 rpm hdd and a 16GB Optane module. I disabled the optane, removed it, and installed the 970 Evo plus. I did a clean install of Win 10 to the ssd.

The laptop boots to windows and everything runs well, but I can't install the Samsung NVME Drivers and Samsung Magician software doesn't completely work like it should. Device manager show SSD drivers are Microsoft. Raid mode is not enabled.

When I try to install Samsung drivers I get error message NVM Express device is not connected. Samsung compatibility error shows The device is connected to the driver, Intel corp. 17.11.0.1000 that Magician doesn't support. Use Microsoft or Samsung NVMe driver.

This is the only storage entry in device manager and the Intel controller drivers are V. 17.11.0.1000

I have asked for help elsewhere and searched elsewhere with no luck on resolving this.

Are there Microsoft drivers that the Intel controller can use? Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

Hi Doctor. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

What driver did the Evo install in Disk Drives in Device Manager? That is of course not nearly as important as the Intel AHCI/SATA controller. Check for the latest versions of both from HP drivers here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers, Intel driver updater here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/... and Samsung Downloads for Evo 970.

I would say that if it's running fine then not to worry about it, but I can understand why you'd want the Samsung Magician Software to be able to monitor and trim your SSD.

Have you tried contacting Samsung under the drive's one year included Support, repair and replacement warranty? They should be able to find out why their software is not playing with that Intel premium RST controller.

If HP is still under warranty I'd ask their Support, too. The Optane port may need reconfiguration. If not under warranty, the HP forums is often good and will be more focused on their models than we are here:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Welcome-to-the-Co...

I hope one of those will be able to help you focus more closely on the specific drive, controller and software than the broader focus we have here over all hardware makes and models.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Samsung was not much help as they basically told me to contact HP. HP warranty is over, so they won't talk to me. I've had responses from the HP community, but no solutions. A user told me to get rid of intel drivers, but no luck on how to do that. Magician software is not compatible with the intel drivers. HP has blocked access to portions of the bios, so I can't see if there's something there that needs disabled.

Did the HP forums user suggest what to replace Intel drivers with? Maybe HP forums isn't as good as it once was.

I would compare the HP Intel chipset with the one suggested by Intel's own updater. It looks like you may have the correct Intel SATA driver. If it's running well then it may not need improvement. The MS driver is for storage spaces RAID (which I would not use, that or any RAID).

I'd also use your Samsung NVme warranty to get their advice on optimizing it to work with the Intel chipset. If the agent doesn't know, ask them to escalate it for an answer. But the Disk drivers are not nearly as critical as the SATA controller.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. I think maybe i have found the problem.

I can't install the Samsung NVMe drivers because one of the minimum requirements is an intel Haswell Refresh Processor.

My CPU is Intel Core i5 8250U Kaby Lake-R which is apparently not a Haswell Refresh architecture.

Without that Haswell, the drivers won't install and perhaps Magician can't work completely.

I am going back to Samsung and update my support question to them.

Is my research on the CPU correct?

Thanks.

Yes, but what you need to ask Samsung (or maybe someone who sees this will know) is if this definitely means any diminished performance with the Intel processor. If so then I would use your Samsung warranty to replace it, if it is still within a year of purchase. If it's recently purchased it may even be under Store Warranty, I'd call the store manager to ask and explain the situation as there's a chance he'll approve replacement on the spot if (s)he's a savvy retailer.
