Restoring Original Windows 8.1 Calculator

After upgrading to Windows 10, then reverting back to Windows 8.1, the original full-screen calculator app is missing.  Its icon is still in the "Apps by name" screen (green icon with white line calculator drawing) but clicking on it starts a full screen display of that icon then it goes away.

Where's a link to that app for a download to reinstall or recover it?

Thanks for any help,

Bart

Hi Bart,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Let's try the steps below and check.

Step 1: Run System File Checker tool

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Press Windows key + X and click Command Prompt (Admin)

Type the following command and press Enter

sfc /scannow

Note: Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.

Step 2: Create a new user account

Press Windows key + R to open RUN box

Type control userpasswords2 and press OK

Under User Account window and under Users tab, click Add tab

Under How will this person sign-in windows, click the option at the bottom Sign in without a Microsoft account (not recommended)

On the next window click Local Account at the bottom

Choose a user name (use password if you want to or you can leave the password section blank as it is just to test)

Click Next and then click Finish

As you click Finish, the previous User Accounts window remains on the screen

Select newly created user and click Properties

Click Group Membership tab

Click to select Administrator and click Other and select Administrator from drop-down menu

Click Apply and then click OK

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

Niranjan, thanks for your reply.

System File Checker found some errors and fixed them.

Did everything and all went well until I got down to "As you click Finish, the previous User Accounts window remains on the screen."

The previous user accounts window didn't remain on the screen.

Couldn't select the new account (test) nor have the option to click "Properties" then go on to the rest of the instructions.

I may have to do this all over again hoping the computer's responses will match what your instsructions state.

Bart

Xircal, thanks for your info.

I used it to see that the calculator app is installed, but I cannot find it on the hard drive in any folder that has a file icon like the one in the Apps menu.  Clicking on its icon in the Apps menu closes that menu and shows the desktop screen.

This 2 in 1's keyboard is so sensitive to barely touching key combinations closing the screen in use or opening another one that makes using this computer difficult for me.  But that's another issue that nobody's come up with a solution.

Hi,

Hit Windows key + E to open File Explorer and then copy/paste the following into the address bar (where it says This PC)

explorer.exe shell:::{4234d49b-0245-4df3-B780-3893943456e1}

The calculator doesn't have an icon and you'll only see a blank space with the word "Calculator" underneath it. If you double click it though, the calculator will open.

Here's a screenshot of it.

Image

P.S. If Bing search launches when you copy/paste the above, open your browser first and then copy/paste it in File Explorer.

Did what you suggested but the only calculator app that showed up was the old one from earlier Windows versions.

I think the original Windows 8.1 calculator with a green background icon has been removed from this computer.  It's still on my Wife's 2 in 1 which is the same as mine except for serial number.  We both tried Windows 10 then reverted back to 8.1.

So now, my only solution is to either reinstall the original OS where it's at on the Recovery partition of the solid state drive.  Unless there's a better one.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Bart

You can download this scientific calculator as an alternative: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=21622

There's also this one: http://winaero.com/download.php?view.1795

I've no idea what either of them look like though I'm afraid.
