Reprogram Function Keys

I have an HP Pavilion 15-cs1067nr laptop with Windows 10, received September, 2019.

For years, on many computers I've owned, F2 has always been used to rename a file or edit a cell in Excel.

On this new laptop my F2 function key only adjusts the screen brightness.

To rename a file I now must right click and go way down the list and select Rename, or hold down the fn key and press F2.

To edit a cell in Excel I have to double click the cell or hold down the fn key and press F2.

Not a major hardship but just annoying and slow.

Anybody know how to reprogram function keys on a laptop in Windows 10?  I would be very appreciative.

Thanks much

Rick Laske

Hi LaskeAkron6526

The actions of the Function Keys (F1 - F12) are generally implemented by the manufacturer of your PC

Boot you PC into BIOS, then on the System Configuration tab, check there for an Fn Key Emulation setting or an Action Keys Setting, from there you should be able to reverse the need for the use of the Fn key . . .

Thanks Bob, but how do I boot my PC into BIOS?  I don't know what that means.

Hi Laske

Start your PC then repeatedly press F10 on the HP screen, that should boot your PC into BIOS, then look for the settings listed above, do not change any other settings in BIOS

Then exit BIOS saving the new setting

Yikes where did I get Bob?  Sorry.

Thanks Dave.

Unfortunately I tried restarting 3 times repeatedly pressing fn and the fn10 key  when the big HP showed up and it only booted up the same as always.

Is BIOS something like on earlier versions of Windows you could start up in safe mode?

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.  I can live with the extra key strokes.  I'll get used to it.

I appreciate your help.

Hi Laske

Don't press the Fn key, try F10 on its own . . .

If that does not work, try the F2 key . . .

Well I educated myself a little and looked up BIOS.  At least now I know what it is.

I looked it up in my Pavilion user manual.  It's kind of scary.  I remember being told never to mess with the registry in my older computers.  Is this something like that?

So my user manual said to boot it up in BIOS by hitting both esc and F10.

I tried at least 10 times with the restart command and also using the shutdown command and fire it up again using lots of combinations of F10 and esc+F10 and fn+F10 and fn+esc+F10.  I tried doing it repeatedly and I tried it just holding it down when the big HP logo comes up.  Nothing did anything different than a normal boot up.  Maybe it's some quirk in my machine.  And maybe it's better I don't mess with it and cause some other harm.

Again, thanks for reaching out and offering to help.

Best to you, Dave.

Laske
