Renaming Copied Folders in Windows Explorer Fails.

For example:

1. copy word document S12345_Factory_Acceptance_Test.doc.

2. paste it in the same folder.

I want to rename it S12346_Factory_Acceptance_Test.doc

3. click on the file, the text turns blue.

4. click between the 5 and the _

5. press backspace the 5 is deleted

6. type 6

7. press enter

8. The file has been renamed 6.doc

This is a fail, I wanted to rename it S12346_Factory_Acceptance_Test.doc

note that if i repeat the above process 4 or 5 times it will work correctly, just the first few attempts dont work.

Same issue for new folder

Hello, Sambobobo

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Have you tried testing the renaming operation in Safe Mode? Safe Mode will turn off all non-Microsoft drivers and startup programs, which can help determine if something else is interfering with your ability to rename files.

If you can rename files in Safe Mode, that means there's a software conflict. You can then use a clean boot to further isolate the problem. During a clean boot, you re-enable the disabled services and startup items one by one to find out exactly which software is causing the issue. These steps might look a little complicated at first, but it's important to follow the instructions carefully to prevent further issues.

Also, are there any third-party security or system maintenance programs (that are not from Microsoft) running on your computer? These could also be interfering with your ability to rename files.
