Recovering Edge Passwords From Image Backup

Was wondering of the possibility in this scenario...

Win10 Pro (latest release) was backed up as an image file on a backup drive.

The backup drive was moved to a new PC running Win10 Home.

Is there a way to recover the Edge passwords from the image file?

There is also the possibility of adding the Win10 Pro hard drive into the new system if that helps.

Thanks!

The answer is: It depends.

If you sync your passwords to your Microsoft account - i.e., you are signed in to your Microsoft account when using Edge - then recovering your passwords is trivial: They are waiting for you. Simply sign in to Microsoft Edge on your new PC, and your passwords will be right where you left them.

If you were not syncing your passwords, you can use the backup image to retrieve them, but the process is a lot more complicated.

Your post brings out the advantage of not storing your passwords in your web browser. You would do better by using a third-party password manager like LastPass or 1Password.

Well, the system indicates I am not syncing.

If I turn on syncing, I imagine the only passwords that would be saved on from the new install.

I have installed the old Pro hard drive into the system just now. I think I will attempt to boot it,

and see if I can turn on syncing and retrieve them that way.

Hello John,

If you are able to access the files from the image backup, then you could try to restore Microsoft Edge from the backup using the method in the tutorial below.

If you weren't previously syncing, then your passwords were not saved in your Microsoft account. But all is not lost.

Many image backup programs let you create a virtual machine into which you can restore your backup image. Having done that, you can retrieve your passwords from Microsoft Edge. Then, simply get rid of the virtual machine.
