RDP Window Growing Every Time I Restore Down

This problem just recently started occurring (and may have something to do with some recent Windows 10 updates).

I Maximize and Restore Remote Desktop MANY times a day.

Using "winposstr" parameter, I have successfully had my window restore to one monitor (I have two), for some time now.

NOW when I restore down, the window GROWS beyond the edge of my monitor.

Each time I Maximize and Restore, it GROWS even larger (in width and height).

I am at my wits end trying to figure out WHY!

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hi M Smith. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

I would not use RDP as it's got problems, and changing to TeamViewer or AnyDesk free version solves all of these for most people. You can compare the two here:
https://www.gb-advisors.com/teamviewer-vs-anyde...

For strange rendering or resolution issues the Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Then adjust each monitor individually as shown here:
https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/diff...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

M.Smith, you are not alone here bud. This is an infuriating bug. I haven't found a solution yet. The RDP window increases in height for me when toggle between fullscreen and window mode eventually causing it to switch to the primary display.

Laffo,

That's exactly it.  I have not been able to find a solution yet, either.

This seems to have been introduced in Windows 10 2004.  The window grows larger each time, but slightly more vertically than horizontally (so the aspect ratio gets progressively more incorrect).

Greg Carmack, how do we forward this issue to bug fixing department?

You can see in many threads under this category the same symptoms are mentioned.

The bug can be easily reproduced by opening an RDP window on a 2nd monitor. Hit Ctrl + Alt + Break a few times and watch the height of the window closely. The window grows gradually then snaps to primary display once window height reaches a certain point.

The simpler version doesn't even require a second monitor.  I can repro the window size issue on a single screen.

This started happening after Windows forced me to update to Version 2004 build 19041.488.

And this issue is not limited to Remote Desktop. It is happening to my own Windows Forms application as well. Every time I minimize and restore the window its height increases. Super annoying bug.

I have Intel HD Graphics 520 video card and it is using a driver dated 12/10/2018. This is the latest available driver. Since the driver hasn't been updated recently this must be a Windows bug as opposed to a video driver bug.

metoo... very disturbing...

Moreover, maybe it's related, but somehow the browsers' (edge, firefox) top edge are appear on the 2nd screen also. (yes, that white stripe is belonging to the browser somehow and it is shown on the upper screen.)

But this is happening on 2004... when I RDP to another older win10, it's not happening.

In the case of Windows Forms applications, the problem repros for .NET Framework 4.5 and above. Downgrading the app to .NET Framework 4.0 makes the problem go away.

But this is not a reasonable workaround since downgrading the .NET version means losing features.

This is still ruining my day, and I'm periodically digging for answers!

Today I looked at my browser history to try and pin down WHEN EXACTLY this started happening.

I had started looking for answers on July 8th.

So I started looking through the Windows update notes and found this in the 19041.388 build:

"Addresses an issue that might cause certain games and applications to have visual distortion when resizing in windowed mode or switching from full screen to window mode."

So I downloaded the CSV file list, and LOW AND BEHOLD the files are all dated July 8th.

Something happened in that build that was meant to fix something, but messed us up in the process.

There's a ton of files in there and I haven't found a culprit yet.
