**Problem: directory name invalid E:, J:

Well today my computer promote an update for the OS (anniversary) when the laptop finish the update i start o used but when i connect a flash drive it says the directory name is invalid with various letters (E,J,S) what can i do? i really need to use my flashdrive!

Method 1

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Device troubleshooter and check if it helps.
1. Press Windows Key +R, type Control Panel.
2. Type troubleshooting in the search bar, click on troubleshooting.
3. Click on Hardware and Sound, click on Hardware and Devices.

Method 2

1. Press Windows Key +R, type devmgmt.msc
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Expand the Universal Bus driver section and double-click on your USB drive to open its properties. Switch to the Driver tab . Click on Disable then click on Enable.

If Method 1 or Method 2 doesn't work you may try to uninstall and reinstall the driver in Method 3 and check if it helps.

Method 3

1. Press Windows Key +R, type devmgmt.msc.
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Expand the Universal Bus driver section and double-click on your USB drive to open its properties. Switch to the Driver and click on Uninstall.
4. Confirm the action in the window that pops up.
5. Restart your computer. Your USB drive will be recognized by the computer as soon as you reboot and they will then be reinstalled.

Hi there, I'm having the same problems tried both my external hard drive and neither work E/ The directory name is invalid...they both show up in device manager and have tried all your above advice.  Please help ..many thanks...
