Poor Bluetooth sound quality in Windows 10

The audio quality when using my Bluetooth speakers in Windows 10 is really poor.  The sound glitches, stutters or is choppy.  Why is this, and how can I fix it?
Answer
Answer

Hello,

While the Bluetooth Settings are open (Settings > Devices > Bluetooth), the PC is actively scanning for Bluetooth devices that are nearby.  While this scanning is going on, other Bluetooth devices may experience a degraded performance.  The audio may glitch, and Bluetooth file transfers may fail.

To work around this problem, check if the Settings app is open.  If it is, close the Settings app while you are listening to your Bluetooth device.
