Please login with administrator privileges and try again

More than one application is giving me this error when I try to run it. My user login does have administrator privileges. I found this old question which seemed to be the same problem, but none of the suggested workarounds worked. In particular when I try to run the command:

sc start secdrv

I get the following error:

This driver has been blocked from loading.

Open Start, type: user account
Hit Enter

Drag the slider to the bottom
Click OK

Try running the application again.

Also, can you right click the application then click Run as administrator?

Which Antivirus utility do you have installed?

Open Windows Defender Security Center
Open App & browser control
Under Check apps and files, set it to Off

Hi Andre, thanks for replying so quickly.

I changed the User Account Control Settings as suggested - no difference.

Using 'Run as administrator' simply did nothing, with or without an error message.

I have Norton installed, but I think I was getting this problem before I had any antivirus.

I set the apps & files security off as suggested, still no difference.

Ok, log into the built in Administrator account then see if you get the same errors.

Open Start, type: cmd
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type:

At the command prompt, type:
net user administrator /active:yes

Hit Enter

Close command prompt, restart, then try signing into the Administrator account.

If that does not work, I recommend you perform a repair upgrade:

In the administrator account it simply doesn't do anything, same as using 'Run as administrator' from the user account. I'm afraid I can't follow the article about performing a repair upgrade. I can't find the ISO to download on the page linked to, for example.

I'm sorry, but this extremely silly. That's an enormous amount to do and I don't understand half of it. I really shouldn't need to be doing a complete repair of the system just to run an application which has installed fine. When I was trying to fix it before, I did fiddle with some of the secdrv config and so on - is it possible that I need to reset it at all?
