Please fix "We need to fix your Microsoft account"

Dear Microsoft,

Please fix the notification error "We need to fix your Microsoft account".

I have done all I can based on previous posts & advice, and it ultimately those have not worked.

Despite disabling "shared experience" thing, skype, etc, the only other thing is the onedrive/cloud thing (which says it's "up to date").

So obviously a Windows update has somehow thrown a spanner in the works... please remove the spanner so everything goes back to normal - thanks :)

BTW: I wouldn't mind, except a notification pops up every now and then, and takes quite a while before it disappears. (clicking the "fix" and re-logging into my account has proven pointless in fixing the error - it just re-appears the next time I log into Windows).

I suspect it maybe a timing issue - EG: Windows is trying to log me into something before it has loaded or recognizes the internet connection exists -  during the Windows startup/loading process.

(this only started happening fairly recently, I'm currently going through eventlog viewer to see if I can find a starting point - I'll re-edit this shortly...) Sorry, I can't remember how to filter by specific event log id's or what the event may be if it's even logged - but I'd guess it's been a matter of some weeks since the error started showing up more regularly and consistently).

Many thanks.

Hi Jaxom. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

1) See if you have a System Restore point to go back to before this problem began? See here how:
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

2) What version of WIndows 10 are you using? Check at Settings > System > About. If less than Version 1909 Install the Media Creation Tool from this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m... choosing Download Tool Now, install the tool, open it and choose Upgrade this PC Now. This will save your files and apps while bringing you up to the latest version by the most stable method. It will also bring all of your Updates current and solve most problems since it reinstalls Windows.

3) Run the Microsoft Accounts troubleshooter at http://www.thewindowsclub.com/microsoft-account...

4) See also this blog post for the first Comment from Gina:
https://www.brucebnews.com/2019/09/how-to-get-r...

5) If you want to report this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it. If you are an Insider I can also vote it up with my MVP badge and track the issue for you.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Heya Greg,

Wow, thanks for such a prompt and detailed reply... I'm somewhat limited in what I can process and comprehend now-a-days...

TLDR:
I'll go with option one - only if you can confirm it won't stop auto-updates plz?

To address your points:
1) I only have "Microsoft Store" in the "notifications & actions" list. Is this what you're referring to as a blanket silencing fix? (i'm quite happy with doing that). Or will that stop auto-'app'-updates?

2) system restore point - No way hosay lol

3) Apparently I'm on version 1903 - but I'm terrified of doing your suggestion here - reinstalling windows!? I recall the dramas and days of re-customising things to get back to "normal"... no thanks ;)
(Can you reassure me that this option would involve minimal fuss & not be like a fresh install? I don't want to have to re-enter credentials, etc) (and see my final point below)

4) The result of this analysis program is "Can't connect to the synch service (might be an internet problem, try later)". Perhaps it's an out of date program?

5) I'm afraid I cannot comprehend all the info here... but it seems your option 1 is the only "fix"...!

6) I'll think about escalating to microsoft as you suggested - but how can "answer.microsoft" not be a microsoft website!? Realisatically, I'll probably just continue to ignore the erroring notification ;)

Final point; I guess the bottom line is I shouldn't have to fix something I didn't break - with a whole lot of techno-babble that (despite my history with data centres, web development, etc) is now beyond my ability to comprehend.

BUT much love & support back to you for your suggestions & effort in replying with all this. (let me know about option 1 if you know?) thx

Hi Jaxom -

This is a Microsoft website but it's mostly a peer forums where volunteers try to resolve your problems.

System Restore is your first line of defense if Windows ever malfunctions as it can run even from recovery media to get you back before a problem started. It should always be turned on C drive with plenty of disk space (5-15%) configured. Here's how to check and when necessary how to run System Restore: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

Did you even read what I wrote about a Repair Install? It specifically says it saves your apps, files and settings in place while reinstalling Windows. There is nothing like the trouble you mentioned.

Please do not skip any steps. We often find out later that the fix was the skipped step. If you need help performing any step I will help.

OK...
Thanks for your latest reply which I read thoroughly - as I did your previous reply ;)

Option 1 has resulted in the notification 'badge' (app icon language) not showing "1", but if I click into the notification panel,  the error still shows there. (I really didn't like having to re-enter credentials whilst windows was restarting - it looked like a reinstall was happening).

In regards to the repair/install option, I have decided to trust you and have initiated this;
"Windows 10 November 2019 Update" available.
[just gimme a moment to vent;]
- Why in gods name was this not installed last november when it was released (and before I had any of this account error problem?)
- I'm sure I have seen updates during shutdown & restarts since last November.

Thanks again Greg - we might have this nailed once the update installs... Although it looks like it might take a week or 2 to download (it's only just now got to 1%), so if I remember, I'll let you know how it turns out - lol) - I've got to the point of hysterical giggling with all this.

But I seriously appreciate your replies & have a great day :)

I AM EXTREMELY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS !!!
So after this install, I get endless notifications about "An App Default Was Reset".

**** IS THIS !!!??? I'm INFURIATED [now] about all this. What "apps" are being "reset" and HOW!? Is all my save data obliterated for this privilage of an unwanted and un-notified "required" update!?

WHY DO I HAVE TO MANUALLY INSTALL SOMETHING THAT DID NOT TELL ME I HAD TO INSTAL!? AND SHOULD HAVE AUTO-INSTALLED 4 months ago!!!>???

Yeah, I'm real p*ss*d with all this hoohaa that should be transparent to the end user.

So lets recount shall we? 5'sh MONTHS!!!!!! That my computer has been vulnerable without whateva the f those updates were.

As a Paying Customer: NOT HAPPY !!! over this incredible and rediuculous security breach!!!!!

FURIOUS!

And I dont even care anymore if I keep getting that d&mn&d error -= never again will I contact you and your fake URL & "pretend" support.

Please calm down as being upset will always work against you in cases like this. You have an experienced Senior Moderator helping you in the world's largest tech forums. No one helps more people in tech forums than I do successfully for ten years, during which I have won the highest award in the tech field every single year.

I suggested to do the Repair Install because it's the most stable method to change to the new version, is a low-impact reinstall that saves your files, apps and settings while at the same time solving most problems. I have suggested it to countless others and it almost always works.

If it is throwing an error after the Repair install then we will fix the error.

Please follow this tutorial from respected MVP Shawn Brink:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/45792-fix-a...

Shawn's tutorials are the gold standard for the tech industry. He will guide you to fixing this error. If you need further help with it you can ask in the Comments section of the tutorial as Shawn will help walk you through and knows the most about the subjects he writes about.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.

I seem to have the same issue, although it is not as frequent as TC's problem.  I think this happens once a week; I get the notification "We need to fix your Microsoft account."  I click on the notification box, then click on the "Fix Now" button in the window that shows up.  After entering a PIN (which even though I set it up I don't use it for logging in) I get the message "All accounts are working correctly."  Which SHOULD mean everything is fine and dandy, but at least once every week I get this same message, repeat the same steps, and get the same result.

Unlike TC, I can trace the start of my issue to when I installed the new build update, build 1909.  I do not believe this is a timing issue as TC suggests, since the most recent instance I got of this issue was a few hours ago, and my laptop has been on since this morning.  This is more of a slight annoyance to me, and I can live with doing this once a week, but I would appreciate it if you would address this issue as expediently as you can.

Also, my file associations got reset (I'm still working on finding what's been damaged, and fixing them) . I remember a few months back a windows update reset all my windows explorer folder customisations.

When an operating system loses it's ability to retain user preferences, that's an extreme design flaw.

I will be ignoring the 6 "An App default got reset" errors everytime windows starts now - along with any other errors that future windows updates will cause - I have lost all faith in windows now.

I will obviously *have* to continue recustomising windows whenever windows updates are installed, since I am no longer able to learn new operating systems (such as linux) - as should have done many many years ago.

I'm over it.
