Photoviewer can't a .BMP image

I am trying to view a .BMP image using Paint.  I have a .BMP image but when I click on it I see the mesage "Windows PhotoViewer can't open this picture....don't have the latest verion of PV".  I can't seem to find PhotoViewer, I have used Bing to search for PhotoViewer but cannot see a MS site where I can download this program from. 

When I drag the image into Paint I am told "Paint cannotread this file. This is not a valid .BMP file ..."  But when I look at the file's properties it is a .BMP and can be opened with Win Photo Viewer.

I am using Win 7 Home Premium so i don't understand why I can't use Photo Viewer.

Try a System Restore.
Select any restore point when there was no such issue.

Thank you but this is on a new install using Win 7 64 bit.  The files still will not open. 

I have also just installed Windows Live Photo Gallery but this did not work either.  I then tried to open the file on a different PC (Win 7 32 bit) but this did not work either.

are you having issues with a single BMP file or ALL BMP files?

I was going to attach a file as an example but this does not seem to be possible here.  The file was created on 11/11/2005 so it was probably created in XP and Win 7 has been improved so it cannot handle fies this old.

I think Paint can't Open some Format of Bitmaps ( bmp Image )
Some vector based output of Photoshop can't be opened with MS-Paint.


Maybe I'm Wrong. But I experienced this Problem While I was rendering a Picture to bmp 
( using it as avatar )

Yes, if Tregarth created a restore point earlier and this issue is not same as mine then This can solve this problem.  Also He should Try SFC/scannow OR restarting this feature From Control panel 
( Turn Windows Feature On or Off )
