Persistent Microphone Issue Regardless of Microphone Being Used

Hello,

I have a ASUS laptop running Windows 10. Within the past week it has started giving me audio issues. My microphone simply doesn't work. It won't register any sound whatsoever. When I run the troubleshooter it plays a test tone and decides that "my audio device is muted" and asks to unmute it. If by audio device, it means my computer, I know that isn't true because I can hear the test tone. The problem is not the speakers being muted it is the microphone. Regardless, I say yes and then the troubleshooter happily asks if all my problems have been fixed. They have not. My microphone still doesn't work.

I know it isn't a hardware issue because when I plug in external microphones, the settings still tells me my only microphone option is the built in "Microphone (Realtek(R) Audio)" rather than any of the multiple microphones I try. It will also tell me, interestingly, that if I plug in a pair of earbuds with a built-in mic and tell the computer that I want it to treat them like a headset, that my output is still the built-in "Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio)" with no other options to choose from, even though I'm able to hear the test sounds through the headphones and not the built-in speakers.

Under microphone privacy settings, I have "access for this device is on", I have "Allow apps to access your microphone" set to On.

I haven't downloaded any new programs recently that might've caused this. I went through with Microsoft Support after the troubleshooter failed but they wanted to connect to my computer remotely and with the prevalence of scams using that exact same set-up I am hesitant. Isn't there anything I can do from my end to sort out the issue here?

Hi Guy. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

I will give you all possible Microphone fixes to try in sequence. Even if you've already tried one I'd do it in this order as one step may affect the next.

1) Please run the Recording Audio troubleshooter at Start button > Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters.

2) Try these fixes which apply next::

3) Some report that what worked is turning off Fast Startup at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do > Change Settings Currently Unavailable > uncheck the box for Fast Startup, Save Settings. Restart and then disable Hibernate file to clear it, restart PC again and enable Hibernate again: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/enable-hiberna...

4) Right click the volume icon in System Tray at right end of task bar, open Sound Settings, then Choose Your Input Devices, see if the microphone is listed, set it as Default device.

5) Type Microphone in Start Search, open Set up Microphone, scroll down to Microphone and choose Get started to set it up.

6) Also reset the prompt to ask for which device was plugged in here:
https://windowsreport.com/you-just-plugged-unpl...

7) Try updating and reinstalling the Microphone driver in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu, then Device Manager, then Audio Input and Output devices, then Microphone . Choose Microphone then Driver tab, then Update > Automatically. If no newer try Driver tab > Update > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers. If that fails try Driver tab > Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall driver.

8) Update the Sound drivers from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page. While there make sure you also have the latest Chipset, Display, Network, USB and all other drivers, comparing with the version presently installed in Device Manager.

If no newer driver then uninstall the ones presently installed in Device Manager, reached by right clicking the Start Button. Restart PC to reinstall.

Keep in mind you also have a one year manufacturer's support, repair and replacement warranty that comes with any hardware purchase, so if problems persist you can call on them to fix or replace it, making sure it gets done soon enough so you can ensure the repairs work in time for the warranty expiration, or extend it.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
