Permanently disable pin option on Windows 10 Home

Hi,

I do not want to use a pin to log in; I am perfectly happy using my password.  However, whenever I log in without having a pin setup, I am prompted to create a pin and can only proceed after clicking Next, then Cancel, then Setup a pin later.  This is extremely annoying.

I have added and removed pin codes to test that it doesn't first require you to create one before being able to choose to permanently disable use of pin codes and this doesn't work.

Previously I was using Windows 10 Pro and this did not occur.  I replaced it with Windows 10 Home and this insanity started.

How can I stop Windows from asking me to create a pin?

I am on build 17134 of Windows 10 Home.

Thanks.

Hi James, this is a bug in version 1803 . . .

Cancel the PIN prompt and login to your PC

Go to Windows Defender Security Centre icon on the tray.

Under 'Account Protection' go to 'Set up Windows Hello for faster, more secure sign-in'

Click 'Set-up', it will prompt you to set up a pin - don't.

Click "Dismiss"

After that, there should be no more prompting at startup

Thanks for the quick response Dave.  Unfortunately, this doesn't work (or doesn't work with later versions); I've just attempted multiple variations and restarts of your fix and continue to get the setup a pin prompt when logging in.

Delete NGC folder and add a new PIN code

Go to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC.
In NGC folder delete all the files. To do so you must be logged as Administrator.
delete the temp folder within the NGC folder
Now go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options.
Click Add a PIN and add a new PIN code for your account.

Now the PIN login should be working again.

Switch to local account and add a PIN code

Option 2:

try to switch to local account, and the add a PIN code. Here’s how to do that:

Go to Settings > Accounts and locate your account.
Click Sign in with a Local Account instead.
Follow the instructions to set up a local account.
Sign out and sign in with your local account.
Now add a PIN code.
After you’ve added your PIN code you need to locate your account under the Accounts section in Settings.
Choose Sign in with a Microsoft Account instead.

That’s it, PIN login should be working now for your account

Attempt the steps Dave gave you again.

Hi Andre.  Thanks for the recommendation.

  1. As stated, I have previously added and removed a pin code successfully, in an attempt to disable the prompting and also did this as one of the variations on Dave's suggestions.  I am able to add a pin code but I don't want to add a pin code.
  2. The NGC folder had no files or folders within it (I had to take ownership of the folder and child objects before I could verify that).

In short, this hasn't solved the problem either.

I haven't tried your suggestion of switching my account to a local account yet as it isn't clear from your suggestion that the switch would itself solve the problem; rather you've suggested I still create a pin code, which would, of course, make the prompt go away, but I don't want to use a pin code.

Whilst I could configure a pin code to exactly match my password, I shouldn't have to configure a pin code if I don't want to (and I don't have to on Pro, this is just a Home edition problem).

Kinda did it different but i went to services.msc (as administrator), opened the properties for credential manager, went to the tab that says log on,then clicked on the button that says "this account". I then searched for my account, restarted my computer and after that i no longer got the pin question again.

That is the complete opposite of what is being asked.

The question is how to disable the PIN permanently.

One last question from a non-techy...   In the "From this location" cell my account name is listed, but in the "Enter the object name to select", what do I put?  There's a button for "Check Names" but it requires me to type something in.

Thanks!
