Performance Issue in FPS games with Variable Refresh rate off on high refresh rate single monitor with high end gpu

I encountered a glitch on my PC where all games were limited to 60 fps in full screen mode, but not in windowed mode(But for some games windowed mode also capped at 60). I tried various troubleshooting steps such as disabling V-sync, reinstalling graphics drivers, and following YouTube tutorials, but none of them resolved the issue. Eventually, I found that disabling variable refresh rate uncapped the fps and fixed the problem.

However, I noticed a significant drop in performance when variable refresh rate was turned off. Previously, I was getting around 500 fps in all games, but after disabling variable refresh rate, it dropped to only 100 fps. This sudden decrease in performance is quite perplexing, and I suspect it may be related to the Nvidia control panel settings. The initial occurrence of the 60 fps cap coincided with the loss of contrast in my games, which I had adjusted to 100 percent in the Nvidia control panel to enhance visibility. However, I'm not entirely sure if the Nvidia control panel is causing the performance issues or maybe perhaps the fact that I have variable refresh rate off in default graphics settings(which supposedly increases fps when possible). I haven't come across any reports or discussions indicating that turning off variable refresh rate could lead to performance problems.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance or insights you can provide regarding this matter.

Hi, I am Dhanam, Independent Advisor here to work with you on this issue.

I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you.

Variable refresh rate (VRR) allows a monitor with VRR capabilities, iusingNvidia’s G-SYNC to automatically adjust its refresh rate based on the frame rate of the image being displayed. The feature enables VRR support for DirectX 11 full-screen games that do not support VRR natively.

When the variable refresh rate is turned on, you get higher frame rates which help reduce screen tearing in games that don't support VRR by default.

Disable SysMain and check:
1. Open Task manager, click “More details,” then click “CPU” to order processes by how much CPU they’re using.
2. Press Win+R, type "services"
3. then in the Services window scroll down to SysMain
4. Right-click SuperFetch, click Properties, then in its Properties window click the drop-down next to “Startup type,” click “Disabled,, and OK.

Hello Dhanam,

Thank you for your assistance, but following the steps you provided did not resolve my issue with VRR. The screen tearing problem still persists in games that don't support VRR by default. I appreciate your efforts and would like to explore other potential solutions. If you have any additional suggestions, I would be grateful for your assistance.

Regards,

Henry

I recommend doing an "in-place upgrade". This will download Windows 11 installer files and use those to update and repair your system.

You can follow the video guide in the below link to know how to get it done:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/videoplayer/emb...

1. Please visit this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-downlo...

2. There you will see an option "Download tool now"

3. A media creation tool with the latest version will be downloaded.

4. Open it in the file location and run it as administrator.

5. Accept the terms and licenses.

6. Select the "Upgrade this PC"

7. And then the downloading will start.

8. Press "Install" once done.

The system will restart several times and the updates will happen.
