PC shows Wrong PC name Windows 10

Hey guys, this isn't a new problem - it is still unresolved but the previous thread was locked

Previous thread

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/start-menu-pc-shows-wrong-computer-name-help/49f7d7ce-38e3-450f-8e3a-cb46abfb76ff

I tried all the suggestions and none worked

if I go to the start menu and type "PC" this is where it should show my computer name, but instead it shows "COMPUTER (1)"

I've had a couple of Windows guru IT guys look at this new laptop I got last August (Asus ROG Strix) and they can't figure it out and as per my previous thread, the suggestions other microsoft staff members made did not resolve it

when I follow those instructions the system shows the name of the computer is Uncle Buck - but when I type PC it shows "Computer (1)" as per the screenshot

I shouldn't have to reinstall or format a brand new computer like this, I really want a solution please

Here is a screenshot proving that Powershell shows 'UncleBuck' as computer name  - but PC does not

Hi skysimonephoto
clicking start and typing pc would normally show the "this PC" app and not the computer name.
if one clicks on the "this PC" result it opens file explorer to the This PC 'folder'

When you open file explorer do you see "COMPUTER (1)" in the left hand pane (where I have "This PC" in the picture below)?

if so right click on it and select rename.

please note, this does not have to be the same name as the computer and does not change when you change the computer name. The default is This PC, regardless of the computer name.

Click Computer(1), & it will open in File Explorer. Then you may right-click it in the left pane, & select "Rename". I don't know how yours came to be called that, & I fear you've got another called simply Computer. If so, we'll have to go on a greater BING hunt than I've just done to figure what's up.

If my suspicions are correct:  Before Win 8.1, that was called My Computer. Now normally it is called This PC. I would rename it back to that - unless you find you've already got one. Then we'll have to go figure what on earth is going on.

I wouldn't name it Uncle Buck for fear of confusion. Uncle Buck is the name of your computer as a device by which your Microsoft Account recognizes it.

Maybe do nothing yet, just report your findings in File Explorer after clicking that thing.

Hey guys, all the suggestions you have given, I have already tried as per both this post and the previous one I linked to

When you go into the REGIT or Control Panel it tells me that the name of my computer is UncleBuck but when I go to 'my pc' it keeps showing 'computer 1'

its enough to make me want to sell the laptop but its brand new and I wouldn't get what I paid back for it

I'm really upset by this issue

thanks for your message

as mentioned in the first post as well as the previous post I linked to, the computer shows in settings that the name of it is UncleBuck but when I go to the start menu or type PC in the bottom left, it comes up as 'computer (1)'

(1) It is wrong to type "PC" into a search box & expect to see the computer name. Instead, you must...

(a) Type "Computer Name" into Search & hit enter, or

(b) Right-click START, & select "System", or

(c) Click "START, Settings, System, About".

At the screen that opens "device name" is the computer name...

It may be changed (as you know) right there, or click "System Info (top right), Change settings, Change button" to change it...

(2) What's going on when you type "PC" into a search box is a bit spooky - but it has nothing to do with the computer name! I was surprised to hear it already was named "This PC" in File Explorer. You should have left it that way. Let us see File Explorer after you have gotten to it that way. Scroll fully past Quick Access, & show us the left pane from Desktop as far down as shows.
