PC freezing randomly after latest cumulative updates and can't uninstall them

My PC is freezing randomly the past few days. No BSOD but the screen, cursor and clock freeze. It happens while reading emails, or scrolling through Facebook, or even when the PC is idle with just a screen protector running. The only way out is pressing the power button. I've done full diagnostics and made sure all drivers are updated. The only thing that's been changed is that the cumulative updates KB5033920 and KB5034123 were installed on 1/10/24 and 1/11/24. I've tried to uninstall them but I get an error message during Advanced Recovery that they can't be uninstalled. Now what do I do?

Hi, good day! I'm John Dev a Windows user like you and I'll be happy to assist you today. I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you. When was the last time it worked properly?

Thank you for replying! I tried that and the earliest restore point is 1/10/24 when Windows updated.

Please try the additional methods below.

Perform a Clean Boot
Determine if a background program or a software conflict is causing the issue.

Press Start then search and type: msconfig
Select System Configuration > go to the Services tab.
Select and make sure to put a check mark on "Hide all Microsoft services"
Click Disable all.
Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all the unnecessary services running there. Restart your computer.

Kindly check the support article below for more details

If the issue still persists, please try performing an In-place Upgrade. Performing this can repair broken operating system files while your personal files, settings and installed applications will not be removed.

Few things to check on the PC

**Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting
**Disable or uninstall any 3rd party Anti-Virus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

I'm having exactly the same issue after updating Windows this week. It was not entirely freezing for me. However, Windows will randomly glitch out such that no application, including task bar and start menu, would respond. You can still click on the buttons on the task bar but nothing would happen. Moreover, CPU usage remains extremely low, less 3% for most of the time. I tried SFC, DISM and memory diagnostics. I also ran MemTest86 and found absolutely not issues. So I really doubt that the latest update is messing things up.

I ended up completely re-installing Windows and that still didn't fix my freezing problem.

I think I found my solution and it appears that it's not Windows Update-related. I'm on a Dell XPS 8940 and after going through their forum I learned that many 8940 owners have had the same problem.

I tried a suggestion from the forum and the solution for me (so far, anyway) was to roll back to Dell's 2.14 BIOS and roll back to the Nvidia 536.40 driver from the Dell website rather than from the Nvidia website.

I haven't had a freeze in a week after doing this.

Good luck!

Oh interesting. I actually tried pretty much the same thing as you did. Windows repair, reset, etc. And none of them worked. I didn't run a Dell machine though. My motherboard is MSI and I haven't updated its BIOS since initial use. However, I did notice that I haven't updated to the latest Nvidia's driver (mine was a version below it). I updated it and it's been good so far for about a day. Maybe it's a combination of the Nvidia driver not fully working with the latest Windows update?
