__P0__ VMware Workstation Pro (No-Op) - Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 10.

Hi, I am trying to upgrade my Windows 8.1 to the new Windows 10 via the Media Creation Tool. After some processing, I stumbled upon this,  __P0__ VMware Workstation Pro (No-Op) - Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 10.

Before I bought this laptop, somehow VMware was inside the system and I think after some years it got uninstall by Avast (via recommendation due to being obsolete). I don't really know the application of the program and dont use it.

I can't seem to find the program in Programs and Features neither is through the search button for the key word VMware.

Appreciate if you could assist me.

Professional tech here! Not going to list my credentials, so you better respect me anyway and listen up! :)

You guys are saying to locate VMWare in C: but what happens when there is no application installed or folders to delete? Keep reading if that is your issue.

5 things I had done before finding the fix

1. NO VMWARE INSTALLED - REVO UNINSTALLER

I had no VMware application installed, so it was impossible to find. I even reinstalled workstation 10 and 15 and used revo uninstaller to remove everything, and still a no go. There was a way to find the _P0_ in a file somewhere located in the Panther folder, but no location that I could find for the vmware.exe. It can be one of a few things, some botched registry entry for VMware or a bug with the update process itself. I have upgraded 100's of computers, and it's a first for me (many with workstation installed in one form or another).

2. RUFUS

I had also used the latest Windows 10 ISO from rufus. It should work regardless, but that was just my case at the time, as I was throwing the kitchen sink at it.

3. GROUP POLICY

  1. Use the keyboard shortcut Windows-R to open the Run box.

  2. Type gpedit.msc and select OK. If you are not signed-in with an administrator account, hold down Ctrl and Shift before you click on OK, and type the administrator password when prompted to do so.

  3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business.

  4. Locate "Disable safeguards for Feature Updates" and double-click on the entry.

  5. Set it to Enabled.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Close the Group Policy Editor.

4. TWEAKING.COM WINDOWS REPAIR

Ran this hoping it would correct an issue with the OS, still not working.

5. DELETE SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION FOLDER

Deleted the software distribution Folder in case there was an issue with the update files. Nope!

THE FIX

This was a head scratcher for sure, I tried every trick I know and then just Googled "Bypass what needs your attention Windows 10 upgrade" instead of the "_P0_VMware Workstation Pro (No-Op)".

That allowed me to find this link, https://www.howtogeek.com/416169/how-to-fix-what-needs-your-attention-windows-10-setup-errors/

There were a number of potential fixes in this page, but I tried this one, and it worked.

With the error up on screen

Go to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

Search compatscancache.dat and delete it

Hit refresh and it should allow you to proceed

to the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther folder. Locate the compatscancache.dat file and delete it.

Deleting the compatscancache.dat file to resume the upgrade process

After you’ve deleted this cache file, you can click the “Refresh” button, and the installation process will continue.

I solved this way:

  1. Make sure to download the update and get to the dialog above.
  2. Open "C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources" with Explorer
  3. Enter the "Panther" directory
  4. Search for "Workstation" in Explorer (make sure to have "search file contents" ticked)
  5. Let Windows populate the search results. When done, open the first file ending with "_APPRAISER_HumanReadable.xml"
  6. Locate the "Asset" node in "WicaRun/Assets" with the Property children "VMware Workstation"
  7. Check the "RootDirPath" node, and copy its "Value"
  8. Locate the file in Explorer and zip it.
  9. Click Refresh in the Modern Setup dialog.
  10. If needed, repeat from step 5 with the next file in the list, until the Setup continues.

Hope this helps as it did for me.
