Oxford English Dictionary (OED) cd 3.1 installation in Windows 10

Some years ago I bought a legitimate pair of cd's for the
complete Oxford English Dictionary (version 3.1, dated 2007). At the
time I installed the program with no problem and data onto my desktop
running Windows XP. Later when I replaced that computer with a desktop
running Windows 7 I had no problem installing the program from the cd's.
Last year I tried installing the program onto a new notebook running
Windows 10. I received an error message in the program directing me to
seek assistance from the company that provided the copyright protection
for the cd's (Link Data Security in Denmark). I did so and received an
update file that was supposed to make the application work on
computers running Windows Vista SP 2 (32 and 64 bit versions). After a
few attempts to use this file I managed to get the application working
just fine under Windows 10 on the notebook. However, when I recently
acquired a new desktop running Windows 10 I have been unable to install
the program successfully on this new computer. Link Data Security can
give no further assistance and refers one to Oxford University Press
which no longer provides support for this product. I have searched the
internet carefully and tried a couple methods that worked for others
with this same issue, but with no success. I have attempted countless
variations of running the setup file and the program file under various
compatibility modes (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8)
without success. I even attempted copying the Windows registry files
related to this program and the program files from my Windows 10
notebook to the Windows 10 desktop (after backing up everything) without
success. I have also tried installation disabling temporary all my
security software. It seems that if it works under Windows 10 on the
notebook there really should be a way to get it to work on the desktop
running Windows 10. The error message that always comes up at the point

of trying to run the program is associated with the Link Data Security company.

Can anyone suggest a tool that might diagnose what the obstacle is?

Hi neatlas

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

Microsoft makes significant changes to Windows 10 every 6 months, so, these revisions might introduce changes that make older applications incompatible.

Your best option might be to install in a virtual machine under a compatible version of Windows:

or

setup a dual boot configuration with an older version of Windows, such as Windows 7 32 bit and install it there. This is if your hardware can still run Windows 7. Most modern computers especially those with Skylake and Kabylake processors or AMD Ryzen don't support Windows 7.

If yours does, then here is how you do it:

Hi Andre,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I had suspected that Windows 10 was being significantly updated from time to time, and this most likely explains my situation. My Dell notebook that runs the Oxford English Dictionary program successfully under Windows 10 was purchased a year before I set up my new Dell desktop. The Windows 10 on my notebook has never been updated since I use that computer only offline. Thus, I am warned not to let the Windows 10 on it be updated in the future!

As for the solutions of setting up a virtual machine or a dual boot configuration, it is far less bother for me simply to bring my notebook over to the desktop and open the application on the notebook. My use of the application on the desktop would only be occasional in any event.

Still, if someone out there happens to have found a way to install the application under the latest Windows 10, I would be interested.

  Thanks again.
