Out of Paper error but printer has paper

Toshiba Satellite L75D-A laptop.

Recently updated to Windows 10.

HP Photosmart 7520 printer connected through home wi-fi.

Printing from other wi-fi devices (iPad) successful.

Printing from the laptop was successful until two days ago, but now I'm getting a "Paper out" message when I try to print (Word or Excel).

There is paper in the printer and the printer will print - Network Configuration Page printed cleanly from the printer.

Wireless Network Test Results page and Printer Status Report page both printed cleanly from the laptop.

I have confirmed there is paper in the printer, no jams, paper size indications correctly matching, driver is most recent version (not recently updated but confirmed), etc.

No viruses or malware detected.

What am I missing and what do I do next?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Herman,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I can understand how frustrating it could be when things go unusual. I will certainly help you.

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if this helps:
Method 1: Disable BiDirectional on the Port tab of printer properties
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
1.Right-clicking on your pinter in Devices and Printers.
2.select Printer Properties.
3. Now click on Ports tab.
4. Near the bottom there should be a tickbox labelled, Disable bidirectional support.

Method 2:
Firstly we will check the status of the Print Spooler service and would have to start it if it is stopped.
You can start the Print Spooler using the following procedure:
In the Administrative Tools folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then System and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools), open the Services snap-in.
Locate the Print Spooler service in the list of services and confirm that the status is started. If it is not, select the service and on the Action menu, click Start.

Clear the print caches by following these steps:
1. Open "Computer" and browse to the folder
"c:\windows\system32\spool\printers" and delete all the files in the folder.
2. Do the same to clear the content in the folder
"c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86"
3. Reboot.

Mr. Raghav,

Thank you very much! I had already attempted your first suggestion. Looking into your second suggestion showed the Print Spooler already to be functioning. Clearing the caches did the trick!

What can I do to prevent this when "Enable Bi-directional support" is grayed out? It looks to be disabled already, but I constantly have this issue. The only fix is to either reboot my computer or reboot the printer. Neither should be necessary. The former takes up my time, and the latter prevents the department from printing until the printer reboots, which is a 5-6 minute process. An HP Laserjet 500.

Yes to both. The thing is, when this happens, the printer is out of paper. So we replace the paper and all of the Windows 7 machines go "oh, ok, the printer has paper again" and start printing.

Windows 10 though doesn't. It might start printing again in 10-15 min, or it might never until either the PC or printer is restarted. It seems restarting the printer sends out a signal it is good and Win10 acknowledges, but Win10 won't acknowledge the "i have paper" signal.

I would like win10 to quit trying to be so smart and just print it.  It is a network printer so the server is holding the spooled data anyway if the printer is down. Why is Windows 10 stopping it from printing my jobs?
