optional update KB4541335, may be corrupting the HD

I have a clean install of windows 10Pro, v1909, build No. 18363.592,  downloaded 03/03/2020.  Installed without issue.  I search for updates and take the available updates :

Cumulative update KB4551762

Windows Malicious removal tool KB890830

Security update for Adobe Flash..KB4537759

Cumulative update NET framework..KB4534132

Intel Net -20.70.11.3

Intel HDC  15.9.4.1041

Lenovo Monitor  6.13.3.0

All installed correctly, laptop restarted without issue.

This is my 3rd install on this hardware today,  on the last 2 occasions I installed the optional KB4541335, upon reboot, the machine reported NO Operating system could be found.  No log in, no option to uninstall, no recovery point -

This time I am not installing that Optional KB.

That happened to me too. Luckily I was too lazy to panic and thought about it. The failed update most likely didn't deep format the drive so all the data should still be there. I got it fixed eventually. Here's how:

The partitions are set to deleted.

You need to scan the drive and rewrite the partition table.

I used TestDisk to do that: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

I copied it onto a Windows installer USB stick, then booted into the windows installer, chose troubleshoot and launched the command prompt. from there switch to the USB stick (usually D: when you have no other drives attached other than the USB stick and the damaged boot drive) and launch testdisk_win.exe.

Follow the instructions to select the disk in question, and choose "Analyse" to have it scan the partitions. It might find more possible partitions than you had. So look at the start and end locations for clues which partitions were likely there to set your lost partitions from deleted to primary. Usually there is a 300MB recovery partition, the 100MB EFI bootloader partition and the Windows C Partition.

Then write the partition table.

After a reboot the disk should be bootable. If not, you might at least be able to run the startup troubleshooter on the windows boot stick to repair the bootloader.

Many thanks ScarletStar,  This was a clean install - no user data to be concerned about. I ran out of time and had to hand over the laptop to the customer, so i did not get a chance to follow your guidance.  However I am sure it will arise again, and now thanks to your input i will be able to try your suggestions.

Many thanks for your time

Lenovo has informed me they are treating KB4541335 as a "Hardware issue" for resolution.
It definitely is as I couldn't even get a USB stick to boot after the "optional" update.

Lesson learned, don't install "optional" Windows 10 updates!!!!

thank you Kevindenver,  it would be nice if it was possible to Hide that update for the future. That does not seem possible with these later editions of Windows.
