OneDrive automatically deleting files from OneDrive folder

The OneDrive forum appears to have been locked, so I am trying this one.

I moved some large files (photos) to my OneDrive folder to share between PCs and left them synchronising.  When I came back to check on their progress, the files had disappeared from the PCs.  Looking at the OneDrive window it shows them being added to Onedrive then mysteriously being removed a few minutes later.  What on earth is going on?    I tried Ctrl & Z to see if it could undo the removal.  The files looked as if they were being restored - but just disappeared again.  It's a good job I noticed, otherwise I could have lost these files forever.  I can't afford to have my important files just disappearing like that.

Hi BorderReiver. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

I root my User folders in OneDrive for some years now with no problems. If ever any are accidentally deleted they remain in the online Onedrive.com Recycle Bin even if the device's have emptied the recycle bins. If you right click Onedrive cloud icon in System Tray and from Settings dots choose View online, are the files in the Recycle Bin and how are they dated? You can order the contents by reverse date order to see easier.

But I'm wondering in this case if this isn't something to do with the new OneDrive on Demand where unless you tell it to save the files on the PC, it will only store them in the Cloud. You can check in OneDrive settings now: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3233488/windows...

What also might have happened since these are large files is you dragged them into OneDrive and they didn't have enough time to upload, yet were not set to be saved on the PC so they disappeared from both. If we can demonstrate this then it needs to be reported in Feedback Hub as a bug - this is where developers want this reported since they won't even see it here.

So choose to save Files on PC in OneDrive Settings, replace the files in the OneDrive folder, let them upload until they get the green checkmark. Good?

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Greg,

thanks for your response.  I had completely forgotten that OneDrive had it s own recycle bin and, fortunately, the files were there.  It is just as well I looked as another file I had added to OneDrive was also in there and could also have gone missing.

I have no interest on files on demand, especially as the internet connection can be somewhat slow and unreliable.  I use OneDrive to synchronise important files between two PCs and a laptop and to have an online backup in case of catastrophic failure.  When it is OneDrive that causes the catastrophic failure - then it is really frustrating!

For this reason, our PCs are set to NOT to use Files on Demand and save on This PC only.

It is worrying that OneDrive has seen fit to delete these files on its own accord.  I shall keep my eyes on the OneDrive recycle bin from now on.

It seems that every new release of Windows 10 includes disastrous new features.  I see that I have also lost the ability to share photos on one PC with the other.  No doubt that will take another few hours to try to get sorted out...

Hi,

Just discovered that new files created and saved on onedrive for business after sync are moved to the recycle bin on my PC.

The files were PDF  and a corel draw file both under 1MB in size.

I'm using onedrive for years and never have this issue.

I was reading thru forums to see a solution but didn't found one.

I'm the only user of this account and yes the onedrive it is synced via multiple devices however since this where brand new files just created nobody can say that were deleted from a mistake and bla bla like I saw on some answers.

Even if I do a restore from recycle bin it put the file back in the bin just after a few seconds.

At this point my trust in one drive went from 10 down to 0 this is a big no no (we are talking here about business gents).

 So what know Microsoft?

I have had the same problem twice now - OneDrive deleted all my files. The first time I was able to get them back from the recycle bin. This time, it seems all the folders have been restored, but many of them are empty. As OneDrive is meant to be a safe storage solution, this is deeply concerning. Come on Microsoft, we are relying on you to preserve our data!

I have noticed that numerous files are getting purged, in most cases within seconds of their creation date/time.  I have been using One Drive for my business for the past 18 month and very frequently need to re-authenticate and setup the one drive application.  While this is inconvenient, I had not been missing files until the past month+.   I can usually find the files in the recycling bin but upon restore they are generally deleted again almost instantaneously.  My work around is to restore to a desktop or documents folder.  Microsoft, I am a partner and you are taking all of my customers to your cloud, I am using one drive so I know what my customers are experiencing and I concerned.  I highly recommend using a 3rd party tool to backup your One Drive files so they are external to the MS cloud.  What if you cannot find your files in the Recycling Bin?  A Swing and a miss Microsoft.  I want it to work, it just is not reliable enough for prime time.

Same problem.  I agree that as a cloud storage solution this is beyond unacceptable.  I am working with MS on this now.  I purchased the business product to protect my data and now I have multiple folder structures with no files in them.  Years of IP gone.  How can a product that clearly has a problem retaining data continue to be on the market??

Further problems with OneDrive followed from the original post.  It would sit there all day supposedly 'synchronising' the files but getting nowhere.  The giveaway was when it said it was downloading files at 0.0 Mb/sec.  Trial and error showed that the files it was struggling with were Office files that had been password protected.  I'd never had that problem before but suddenly it raised its ugly head.  Microsoft support told me that synchronising password protected Office files only works if one has a subscription to Office 365.  Well, that was news to me!  It had been working fine up until the last Windows update.  If the answer IS true, it slaps all those, like me, in the face that have paid for Office 2016.  I find it dreadful that we get treated with such disdain.

This has happened to me 3 times with a brand new laptop. Ive sent the lapback twice. Ill do all the updstes and set up One Drive. Then, a few days later, I get a notification from One Drive that hundreds of files, that I didnt delete, were recently deleted from my device. After, the laptop seems to be broken and cant even be restored. Seriously thinking this is a One Drive issue.
