November 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2

November 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2:

https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/3000850?wa=wsignin1.0

This update rollup includes the following new features and improvements:

  * Refreshed language packs

  * Defence-in-depth security and Schannel hardening

  * Support for newer hardware (boot order allowance, SD card

  improvements, USB debugging)

  * Improved Web Services for Devices (WSD) printer support during

  network switches

  * Performance and reliability improvements in clustered virtual

  machine mission-critical environments

  * Improved manageability

  * Additional hardware support (devices that have third-party disk

encryption software enabled can now be upgraded to Windows 8.1 more

  easily)

This November update rollup also includes all previous updates since our last image update in April 2014. This is a convenient single step to bring Windows clients and servers up to date. Unlike our April update, the November update rollup is not required to be able to continue to receive security or other updates. However, we strongly recommend that you deploy it to Windows clients and servers to benefit from these new features and improvements as well as to prevent many known issues that have been resolved since April. This update is thoroughly tested to the same quality level as our previous service packs. However, unlike service packs, this update does not change the version number and does not deprecate or change any APIs in a manner that would require recertification.

Since applying this update to a fully patched system, the system starts trashing!

It won't shutdown anymore and after a forced reboot, the disk is busy with a lot of .edb files, e.g windows.edb, which grows fastly. Wasn't the update supposed to prevent this very behaviour?

System Settings isn't responsive, after quite a while there is even a nasty error message that a service could not be started. The service name looks like part of a regkey.

After reverting to the system restore point right before the update everything works fine again.

I observed this behaviour on both my machines.

Seeing the exact same thing on my laptop. It refuses to shut down. I cannot start certain Control Panel items from the search charm. An error about something called immersivecontrolpanel popped up constantly. Also, it broke Avast antivirus so badly that the antivirus service is still running even though the UI disappears and the app cannot be uninstalled.

Now trying System Restore and still waiting for results.

EDIT: System Restore doesn't work for me. Windows gets stuck at the "Restarting..." screen and a hard reset leads me back to the same set of issues.

System Restore worked for me on my desktop but not on my laptop for obvious reasons.

Since Avast is broken it might cause the troubles!

EDIT: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160717.0#top

Use the Avast Clear utility. When the reboot hangs, just hard reset, it will work nevertheless.

I opened a ticket at Avast.

Same for me - this update package messed up my system. I experienced similar issues as other people commented on other pages and above.

- System did not shutdown or restart anymore. Shutdown only possible via hardware button.

- Avast antivirus did not work properly anymore. Interface would not start.

- Classic Shell start menu stopped working properly

- Internet Explorer closed directly after opening. I tried to reset IE to default settings, but did not work. The browser opened - seemed to hang - closed.

- System recovery did not work when started inside Windows. After starting system recovery, the system shows ¨Restarting..." screen and it hangs without any activity.

Finally I managed to start system recovery from the BIOS/bootup menu (before Windows starts). It took 3 hours, but my system is now back to previous state, and working fine. I will not try to install KB3000850 again....

When I installed the recent update, my computer hung during the install.  It had worked fine for the last number of months.  When I got the PC to come back up, Internet Explorer didn't work anymore (it just closes right away) and I couldn't sleep or hibernate the computer any more.  I tried doing a restore to a previous restore point but the computer screen just continues with "Restarting" for ever.  I let it run 7.5 hours before using the hardware button.  I tried multiple restore points.  And I can't get the PC to go into Safe mode.

Any thoughts?

I learnt my lesson, next time I am not going to be so anxious to install those "optional" large updates, it appears to be a beta update until people report problems and they fix it.

[ ... ] It won't shutdown anymore [ ... ]

Same here  - but fixed by removing a relatively small package that IIRC was different from KB3000850.

Details, and I hope I remember it all correctly:

I fixed the situation for me by uninstalling not the rather big  - around 800 MB - KB3000850, but by removing a relatively small package  - 11 or 12 MB - with a different KB number, but an install date identical to KB3000850, namely Nov. 19. Sorry I didn't write down the KB number of the package I removed. My guess is it might have been KB3014442, that I uninstalled, because this is still offered as part of KB3000850 via

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3000850

And before removing it I didn't find this package in the Control Panel "Installed updates" tab, but in "Uninstall an update" one.

To me it looks as if that small package was installed together with KB3000850. And without having some sort of dependency with  KB3000850, because after uninstalling the small one, KB3000850 is still offered here in Control Panel in the "Uninstall an update" tab. And to make things ultimately complicated, Windows Update now offers me to install the already installed KB3000850, but now with 11.6 MB only. Again: KB3000850 for AMD64 actually was a three part package with about 800 or so MB.

And this one goes out to Microsoft: Is this KB3000850 (11.6 MB), that after the removal of the already mentioned small package is offered to me here as an optional update via Windows Update the already fixed version, that I can safely install? Thanks in anticipation.

Regards

/ Edit, 2014-11-21:

I haven't installed Avast, but other anti-virus software /

/ Edit, 2014-11-23:

Meantime I removed KB3000850, too, because the shutdown loop returned. So far this seems to have fixed the problem. /

Uninstalling avast solved the problem.  But it took a lot of time to figure out that was the conflicting issue.
