Notification area (system tray) icons missing, Reset did not work

Operating system: Windows 10 Home x64, Version 1607

Problem: Notification area (system tray) icons are missing.

If I restart explorer using Task Manager the missing icons are displayed. When I reboot my computer the icons again disappear.

I tried to reset the TrayNotify. This did not work i.e.

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

I deleted "IconStreams".

The "PasticonsStream" was not displayed???

Should there have been a "PasticonsStream" field?

Can you fix the problem of the missing Notification area (system tray) icons?

Hi Kevin,

With regard to your query about the system tray, we suggest that you follow the steps below and see if it helps.

  1. Right-click on an empty space in your desktop taskbar and select Properties.
  2. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, find the selection labeled Notification Area and click on Customize.
  3. Click on Turn system icons on or off.
  4. If you'd like to always show all icons, turn the slider window to On.
  5. Reboot the PC for the changes to take effect.

Let us know the result.

If the Settings referred above don't work and you altered your registry (which is always risky)  then you may have messed it up and it's possible a Reset is passing back through the errant setting.

See if you can reform your install via Windows 10 Performance and Install Integrity Checklist - Microsoft Community.

Otherwise if you haven't done one yet I'd do a Clean Install Windows 10  which has zero complaints and zero return with issues from tens of thousands of users who stick with the steps, tools and methods in the Wiki.
