No sound while playing videos on Windows 10

Original title: Plays Videos but no sound

I have a Gateway Laptop.  Since upgrading to Windows 10 the audio doesn't play on videos.  I was able to get my music to play through the speakers using Grove Music app.  All of the drivers are up to date and the speakers are working.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Bobbie

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced.

What is the exact model of your laptop?

How you're trying to play those videos?

Are you using Windows Media Player or any other video player?

How about playing videos on online?

Is your PC running with latest Graphics card drivers?

Before you come up with the above information, check and install latest drivers for your device from Manufacturer website. You can search drivers using your device model. Suggest you to try the below mentioned steps and see if they fix the issue.

a) Open run command by pressing Windows key + R and type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotes) and hit Enter.

b) Spot and expand the “Sound, video and game controllers”.

c) Right click on the High Definition Audio Device driver and select “Disable”. When it prompts to choose an option, click OK. Close the Window, come back and try to re-enable it. Now check if the issue still appears.

d). If it does, then right click on the High Definition Audio Device driver and select “Update Driver Software”. When it prompts to choose an option How do you want to search driver, then go with Search automatically for updated driver software. If you have a driver available on your PC, then select Browse my computer for driver software, then select the appropriate location, where the driver located on your PC for updating it. (Ensure that PC is connected to Internet while performing this step)

e). Once this is done, restart the computer to check the problem fixed. If it doesn't fix the issue, then Right click on the same driver and select “Uninstall” then restart the system and let the system install the driver automatically on Start. Check and see if it resolve the issue. (Recommended step)

Follow the same steps to update Graphics card drivers. You can find Graphics card drivers under "Display adapters" in Device Manager.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.

Hello Bobbie,

Does they give any error message?

If that is the case, then the problem might lies with the browser you're using or might be with your Facebook Profile page. Now check and see if you able to play videos from other websites (I.e. like YouTube) on the same browser. If you can, then it indicates that there is no issues with the Flash player.

Now access Facebook page on other web browser to see if it plays correctly. Do check and ensure that your Profile page settings are appropriate.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.

I have tried different videos through YouTube and Facebook using Chrome. Firefox/Mozilla and Explorer.  There is still no sound.  As I said in the first email, this wasn't a problem until I upgraded to Windows 10 on January 23rd. Should I go back to the old windows?

Thank you,

Bobbie

Hello Bobbie,

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced.

The issue might be with the drivers or might be with the User account settings. Say for example, when you're playing a video on Google Chrome, go to system tray and right-click on sound icon, then select Open Volume Mixer. Then you can able to see Google Chrome listed there with the volume slider. Try to check with that to see if it selected correctly.

If it does, then the problem might be with the drivers. I understand your PC is up to date with the latest drivers. But there might be chances where the latest drivers still fails to work correctly due to compatibility. Go to device Manufacturer website and then try to update both Video and Audio drivers to see if they work correctly. If you don't find Windows 10 drivers, then try to install the available drivers. Click the link to download the drivers from Manufacturer website.

Keep us posted the outcome.
