Uninstall McAfee through Control Panel and use the McAfee Removal Tool. http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Did you install another AV program wihout uninstalling McAfee? If so, that might be causing a problem.
Then try to repair your internet connection....see if right clicking on the icon in your tray will give you an option to repair the connection.
Have you read this? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
Is this a new computer? You might be able to reset the computer back to factory default and that might fix it. If still under warranty, call Dell!
And keep monitoring this thread for suggestions...there's several posters on this Networking Forum (not referring to me when I say this) who are pretty sharp at resolving issues such as yours.
Good luck...

I had already unistalled McAfee and repair the inernet connection, no joy. I didn't install any other AV software.
Computer not new but I guess I could try resetting - that seems a bit drastic, since it worked one day, then not the next - there must be something somwhere causing the problem.....
I saw the link about resetting the TCP/IP, problem with that is that the more user friendly approach requires an internet conection to do it! I can't run this on my iPad. I could try the more techie option but that looks a little beyond my abilities.
Anyone else, any other ideas i could try???
The key seems to be the error message I get : "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration - although I guess that could be a red herring?

Did you run the McAfee Removal Tool to ensure McAfee didn't leave vestiges in the firewall that might interfere with the Windows FW settings?
Let's try a more direct route since you can't make a connection using ethernet or wireless.
Contact support at your ISP and see if they can fix it or tell you what your best solution might be..maybe you've got to register that computer again for some reason.
And see if you find any ideas in this thread: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f31/solved-wireless-network-connection-doesnt-have-a-valid-ip-configuration-617004.html
And this thread gives all sorts of ideas: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/wireless-network-connection-doesnt-have-valid-ip/60d716ee-bb95-4526-a95a-3276f2fe6305?page=2
