No hard drives listed in This PC since Windows 10 upgrade

Hope someone has seen this and can help. Since upgrading from 7, none of my hard drives are listed. The entire drives category is missing, all I see are Folders. The drives are there and accessible if I explicitly navigate to them, such as "C:\", in which case my path becomes: > This PC >SYSTEM (C:\), and I can explore the drive. They all have the same letters assigned as they did in 7, they are all properly listed in Disk Management, where I can choose to open an explorer folder on them. The ones configured as shared still appear on the network. But none of several internal and external drives are listed in This PC. I have Googled this and can't find anyone complaining of this particular issue. Has anyone seen and solved this? Here's a screenshot:

Hi,

Thank you for being a part of Windows 10.

I appreciate you for providing details about the issue and your effort towards resolving it.

Try the following methods and check if it works:

Method 1: Perform System File Checker (SFC) scan.

Try to run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to check for any file corruption. SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files on the computer and repair them.

  1. Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

         sfc /scannow

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 2: DISM Commands.

Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM.

I would suggest you to run DISM commands from Command Prompt (Admin).

Please follow these steps:

1. Press Windows + X keys and click Command Prompt (Admin).

2. Type the following commands in command prompt one by one and press Enter after each command.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If the issue persists then follow the below method.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue persists.

Refer to the following Microsoft article and look under the section: Set up accounts.

I tried all 3 solutions precisely and to the letter, no relief. Here is This PC as viewed from the newly created account:

A new development. Though none of my hard drives are yet visible in This PC, when I plugged in my Android Samsung S5 in, now the Devices and drives category appears:

Just to reiterate, all other drives seem to be configured correctly as follows:

Another thing I just noticed: Autoplay is set to open folder on device discovery, but it does not work.

Hi,

I suggest you to place the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue still persists. Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Also perform Hardware Troubleshooter to diagnose issue with hardware if there are any on your computer.

  • Type “Troubleshooting” on the search bar.
  • Click on troubleshooting, then click on “Hardware and sound”.
  • Under Hardware and sound, click on “hardware and devices”.
  • A pop-up will appear, click on the “Next” button and your hardware troubleshooting will start.

Hope it helps. Feel free to write to us for any other assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.

Thank & Regards,

SuJata Moktan.

In another thread I learned that my  HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry Explorer Policy key had NoDrives in it. Deleting that allowed Devices and drives to appear after reboot. The Long Night is over. I am still a little puzzled that my phone would make the category appear, but that is not a burning issue at this point.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    SOFTWARE
        Microsoft
            Windows
                CurrentVersion
                    Policies
                        Explorer
NoDrives  <== I deleted this and all drives now appear in This PC.
