"No bootable device"

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my computer not starting. Not being very knowledgable about technology, I would like to ask if there is any way I can still fix it. Since the language on my computer is not English, I hope I translated everything correctly in the folloiwng:

Earlier, I dropped my windows 10 laptop, but after turning it on again it was still working fine. When I wanted to start it just now, a blue screen appeared with the error message Windows systems32\logfiles\srt\srttrails.txt

I followed a YouTube tutorial that suggested some options of how to fix this problems. The last thing I did was click on Troubleshoot > advanced options > command prompt and then typed in what the video said. Instead of always showing that the operation was completed successfully after each line of code though, it sometimes showed "access denied".

Bootrec /fixmbr

Bootrec /fix boot

Bcdedit /export c:\bcdbackup

Attrib c:\boot\bcd -h -r -s

Ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec \rebuildbcd

Then I had to wait for a bit. Unlike in the video, no window installations could be identified. So I just wrote "exit" and pressed enter. Afterwards I just tried the option "continue" again and as my laptop still did not work, I turned it off. As I wanted to start it again, suddenly it did not go immediately into repair mode anymore but just showed the message "No bootable device - - Please restart system".

Any idea what could have happened? Do you think it is a hardware or a software problem? Could it be the mainboard has detached or is broken?

Thank you already in advance!

Hi, ElliMm

My name is Kathleen and I am an Independent Advisor. I would be happy to help you today.

Try to enter Safe Mode to repair Windows.
Interrupt the normal boot process of your Windows 10 PC
If Windows 10 fails to boot normally three times over, the fourth time it enters by default in an Automatic Repair mode. Using this mode, you can boot into Safe Mode. To trigger the Automatic Repair mode, you must interrupt the normal boot process three consecutive times: use the reset or the power button on your Windows 10 PC to stop it during boot, before it finishes loading Windows 10. If you use the power button, you might have to keep it pressed for at least 4 seconds to force the power off
Then you proceed to repair the computer:
With a reset, all of your Installed applications are lost, but you get an option to save your files if you want. If a system image from the OEM exists-called a recovery partition, then it also gives you an option to restore it. It would make your PC load to default factory settings.
Navigate to Troubleshooting section, again.
Select Reset.
If you select keep my files, your files would be kept. You might also get the third option-restore to factory settings-which isn’t applicable on the PC.
After selecting the desired options, you are presented with a confirmation, something like this- This indicates what you have chosen.
Click on Reset and the resetting should begin.

Let us know if these steps help you to resolve the issue.

Just for some additional information: the laptop is from Germany, but right now I am in China and will stay here for a few more months, thus being a bit limited with my repair options. This is also the reason why I even tried to fix it by myself.

The last back up I did was 2 months ago and it would be great if I can save the new data. Also, I heavily use the laptop for work and have to fix it as quickly as possible.

Hello Kathleen,

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Sadly, your suggested fix did not work:

Even after interrupting the boot process three times and turning on the laptop, the screen only shortly shows the maker's logo (Toshiba) and then jumps direktly to the message "No bootable device - - Please restart system". Any key I press just makes the massage appear again.

This is what my screen looks like.

Do you have any other recommendations? Did I do something horribly wrong by entering that code earlier?

Thank you so much in advance!

Check the boot screen for a message such as "Press F8 to Enter Setup" or "BIOS Setup: F8." The function key varies depending on the motherboard manufacturer. Follow the on-screen prompt to access the BIOS. If the computer begins to boot into Windows, press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart and try to enter the BIOS again

Good morning Kathleen,

With F8 I just returned to the same message of "No bootable device - - Please restart system". But with F2 I was able to reach this:

Is it the BIOS?

The only BIOS related things I could find were that the System BIOS Version is 1.10 and under "Security" a BIOS Password Index where neither User nor Supervisor were registered.

I could not find whether the BIOS is reading the HDD or SSD.

Windows never starts, instead after starting the computer I am immediately presented with the error code. Therefore I never get to enter repair mode...

I guess that my BIOS cannot reach the HDD/SSD.

Do you think this could be a hardware issue?

Yes, there where it says (HDD / SSD) it says that you have a TOSHIBA

Kathleen,

Thank you very much for your help again. In the end, I had to get the hard disk replaced with a new one. The old one had to be physically opened up by a data specialist, but most of my data was saved.
