Network Error - Windows Cannot Access....

Hello,  We have two Windows 10 version 1903  PC's networked together via Ethernet wiring to a broadband router.

There are a couple of directories which aren't media that we used to share over the network that are no longer available. I go into File Explorer>Network>******>*****  and I get the message

Network Error

Windows cannot access\\****\****

You do not have permission to access...….

I've been onto the machine and set up sharing for the relevant files but I get the same error message.  I've tried the reset network option on my machine, but not the machine where the directory resides.

Internet Access over the same connections works fine.

Hello Culp_64,
I am Matt, an Independent Adviser and a specialist technician. I would like to assist you with this and hopefully I can help you to resolve this issue promptly.

What I would do is go to the folder/files you want to share, right click and select properties.

Firstly in the sharing tab ensure they are shared.

Next in the sharing tab -> advanced sharing option you will want to fix up who has access, if this is a closed network and you want to test if it is a security issue add full control for everyone for testing purposes. If that work then you can hone in the security and limit access.

Next you will want to add your other users so click add, the press the "Locations" button and it should show the other PC, select that then search for the username that is the user on the other PC.

If no other computers show up what you can do is add the user on that computer, then when connecting from the other computer you will want to add the computers hostname before the user name.

Example on PC1 i share the folder C:\MyShare to the user Matt
When connecting to PC1 from PC2 i would use \\PC1\MyShare (OR \\192.168.0.XX\MyShare computer IP address)
Then when asked for username and password I would enter PC1\Matt as the username.
You can find the hostname of your computer by opening Command prompt and typing "hostname" and press enter.

There are many ways to setup file sharing, above is how I do it when I go places, at home I have a domain setup so it is slightly different.
Microsoft have some really easy guides you can follow at the following link https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/409269...

I really hope this helps, let me know if I can be of more assistance. Have a great day.

Kind Regards,
Matt Horsley
