net 3.5 installation fails with 0x800f0831

I tried to install .NET 3.5 in several ways on Win8 (by downloading from Microsoft site, by enabling Windows feature, by copying from install disk and running Dism.exe). All attempts failed with the same error code 0x800f0831. Google/Bing does not help.

Hey,
I get the error 0x800f0831, even after doing everything in this article (which does not mention the error I have).

- I tried multiple time, with 2 different windows 8 DVD, a pro and and enterprise version from my neighbor.
- I also tried to download the 250MB client to install offline.
- I also tried to install it via windows update through Windows Features.
- I also tried to launch this command  Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:x:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess and I get "Feature Name NetFx3 is unknown". A Windows feature name was not recognized."
- When I proceed to /Get-Features, I get an error 87, the get-features option is unknown.

I don't know what to do and I can't find any help regarding this error on internet.

Hi there,

It might be a bit late but I encountered the same problem on a WIN2012 standard edition
Fujitsu server.

Did you find a solution by any chance?

Thx.
Christophe

No, did not find any solution.

However there is a workaround: add to config file of your .NET 2/3/3.5 application to use .NET 4 Framework, this usually works, so you won't need to install Framework 3.5.

Hi,

I had a problem on Win 7 with .Net 4.0... It wouldn't update.

I eventually found a tool to uninstall individual .Net versions, or all of them.

I tried just uninstalling .Net 4.0 and reinstalling it, and everything was successful.

You can take a look at more info here....

http://betanews.com/2012/08/06/new-net-framework-cleanup-tool-adds-windows-8-net-4-5-support/

This has worked for a couple of people with a .Net 3.5 problem in Win 8, but didn't work for another...

Even if it shows "Uninstalled", uninstall it anyway.

Hi there,

Thx everyone for your concern.

Changing the config file,  why not but i have 3 soft where i have to do it. I have another server, which is a test machine and i can install Net 3.5 with no issue

I also tried your tool but that it has no effect on my client WIN2012 server even if i see in the log file thta it has removed files. In the add role interface, all boxes are still ticked for 4.5, no change made.

It is a just brand new dc... pfff

Christophe.
