mts files invisible in photo gallery

Hello

Photo gallery 2012 doesn't detect my mts video files (from panasonic camera) even though I can see the files in windows explorer and play them with windows media player.
It was also the case with the former version of photo gallery but I remember that at the begininning it worked. I mean just after installing photo gallery after buying the computer. In the meantime, various other programmes were installed.
I have windows 7 and my computer was bought in 2011.
I tried uninstalling photo gallery and re-installing it but no way...

On my other computer, also running on windows 7, things work just fine.

Thank you for your help...

Hi ThierryDuren,

Thank you for visiting us here in Microsoft Community. We are more than happy to assist you in your concern that Photo Gallery is not able to play/detect your video file.

I suggest that you try to open that file via Movie Maker just to check if it can be played there. In addition:

 1. Ensure that you have the latest version for Windows Photo Gallery. You can download the latest version here.

2. Check that the files you are using are of a supported format – Some file formats are not supported by Photo Gallery/Movie Maker. A list of supported formats can be found here.

Note: You may also try to convert it to a known file format using video convert. You may search Bing for some video file converters.

3. Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files. Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

· Try running the Microsoft Fix It tool for codecs.

· Media info will be able to identify the codec required for your audio and video files, and will provide a link to the website for the required codec. You can get it here.

Note: If you can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Movie Maker project.

4. Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

a. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.
b. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.
c. If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

Please return back if the issue has been fixed. If not, we will further assist in you resolving the issue

Thanks!

Found a Solution that worked for me using Windows 7 Ultimate & WLPG 2012

Close Windows Live Photo Gallery if it is open.

Open your registry: START> RUN> REGEDIT.EXE

Goto this KEY

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Media\Windows Media Player\Capabilities\FileAssociations

You need to add this missing entry to FileAssociations

SELECT New String Value  - ENTER the name as ".mts"   Don't put the quotes

Click on that Name ".mts" and enter the value data "WMP11.AssocFile.M2TS"  Don't put the quotes

Close Regedit

Open Windows Live Photo Gallery, wait a minute, choose refresh if they don't show up right away.

I also noticed these were missing too, all of them have the Same value data of "VMP11.AssocFile.M2TS"

.m2ts

.m2t

.mts

Good Luck out there.
