Missing WAN Miniports after upgrade

I upgraded a perfectly running Windows 7 pro to Windows 10 pro. Everything looked great after the upgrade but I did have to tweak a few things here and there. The problem came when I tried to Windows VPN to connect to my office and it just sites there at "Connecting to Office" and never connects.

When I check my Network Connections some of the VPN's I have set up show WAN Miniport (SSTP), right click for properties gives a "Network Connections - An unexpected error has occurred". Tried deleting the Office VPN and re-creating and after creation the Network Connection shows "Unavailable - Device missing".

Device manager does not show the WAN Miniport (PPTP) and I can't figure out how to get it back. I have updated Network adapter, BOIS and chipset drivers.

I compared my Device manager to another same model pc running Windows 10 Pro and I am Missing quite a few of the Miniport adapters:

I use Windows VPN to connect to customer accounts and am pretty much dead in the water. Any advice would be appreciated...

Hi John. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

Uninstall the Wireless adapter driver in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features and Device Manager, remove the software if prompted.

Now install the latest Wireless adapter software from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact PC model or Serial Number on sticker on PC.

Compare this driver with the latest on the wireless adapter maker's Support Downloads web page. If necessary trace the precise Hardware ID as shown in this tutorial: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

When searching for driver via Hardware ID you'll need to exclude the (often cleverly disguised) driver finders. However sometimes I will install Driver Max for it's two per day free driver downloads if I have a problem finding a driver, and have never had problems with its findings. This should be a last resort, however.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thank you for the quick reply Greg.

I did uninstall the Wireless driver and reinstalled direct from Dell and it didn't help. I even went to the Intel support site, ran a scan and updated a few more drivers including the wireless driver (Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 ) and still have the missing Miniport issue

Just an update in case someone runs into the same issue. I started digging around for what is needed for the VPN connections to work and was looking at services. I found that the Remote Access Connection Manager service would not start. One of it's dependencies was the DNS Client service. Checked it and it was disabled, couldn't restart, start or stop. I started researching it found an article about someone wanting to disable DNS Client.

They were told to go to regedit:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Dnscache then look for the start key and change it to 4 to disable the service. I checked mine and it was set to 4 (Disabled)so,  I changed it to 2 (Automatic) . Reset the laptop and now all my WAN Miniports are present and I'm able to use the VPN connections.
