Missing "marketresearch.msi" file while trying to scan a document.

I have an HP Pavilion dm4-3050us laptop with an HP Officejet 7310 All-in-One laptop connected to it.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Operating System on it.  Recently, I tried to scan a document to my laptop and received a message that the "marketresearch.msi" file is missing and the document will not scan onto my laptop.

Is this a Windows problem or an HP problem.  I have tried to get an answer from HP Support Forums with no luck.

Can anyone help me with this problem....PLEASE???

Trish

    Hello Trish,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community forum.

I would like to know some information about the issue so that we could help you better.

Have you made any hardware or software changes to your computer recently?

It seems to be a Windows installer service issue.

I would suggest you to try using steps provided in this Microsoft knowledge based article and check if it helps.

    Refer:

How to troubleshoot issues with Windows installer service

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651/

Download and run the fixit. Select automatic and the install problems choices. After it runs, it will ask you to select a program. Select "Market Research". As it uninstalls the program, another window may prompt you about another HP shortcut. Please ignore it, do not browse to search for it. Then, it will show a message, "the shortcut no longer works". Select to delete it.

It will then finish up after another few minutes. Reboot, and your programs will print just fine without any more error messages.

Please use the other suggestions in the above article, if issue still persists.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps from section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” to reset the computer to start as usual.

    I hope this information helps.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank you

    Ratandeep,

My problems are not with printing, I can do that just fine; however, I cannot scan or copy.  I have not made any recent hardware or software changes.

I had previously tried the Microsoft Fixt It tool, without success.  I remember selecting Market Research, but I do not remember it asking me about another HP shortcut or deleting the message "the shortcut no longer works."  I am petrified of deleting anything for fear of doing further damage as my issue is with copying and scanning...not printing.  I can print just fine!

I do not plan on doing anything further until I get a reply from you to this message.  I don't want to lose my printing ability too!

    Trish

    Hello Trish,

    Thank you for your response.

    I understand your concern.

If you try suggestions provided in the previous post, it won't affect the ability to print.

You may try the suggestions and please reply with results.

    Thank you

    Ratandeep,

The link you sent to me on how to How to troubleshoot issues with Windows installer service

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651/ is not longer a viable link.  I did scroll down for instructions on how to manually check for the missing "marketresearch.msi" file.  I opened Start, typed in cmd, and at the command prompt I typed MSIExec.  At that point I received the following message which I did not know what to do with:  (Can you give me step by step directions for this?  I don't know what to do):
