Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000: Plays audio even at 0 volume

I was recommended this headset by a friend, but have run into an annoying problem with the audio: it's always too loud, even when I set the volume to 0.

I'm running Windows 8.1, have the headset set as default audio output and have installed the drivers (Windows 7 version as recommended from a similar issue), and even tried restarting my computer, but nothing has changed the audio level.  Increasing the volume does affect the output volume, but it goes from too loud at 0 to deafeningly loud at 50+.

I also tested on my old laptop running Vista and had the same problem there.

Is there any solution to this problem, or is my headset defective?

Hi Jeffery,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum.

Please answer the following questions for better understanding.

  1. What happens if the audio is set to default speakers, are you facing same issue?
  2. Have you check with any other head set to isolate the issue?

I suggest you to follow the below mentioned methods.

Method 1

Run the hardware and device troubleshooter

The hardware and devices troubleshooter can detect and fix errors and incorrect settings in devices. You can refer these steps to run this troubleshooter:

a) Press Windows key +X, select Control panel
b) Change the view by option on the top right to large icons
c) Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
d) Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

If the issue persists, follow method 2.

Method 2

I suggest you to contact hardware support for help.

The speakers on my computer do not have this problem.

I don't have any other headsets to test with.

I ran the troubleshooter, and the problem persisted.

I went into the Device Manager and told it to search online for a driver update on the LX-3000.  It's been doing so for 10 minutes, and I'm guessing that's not normal and probably means there isn't anything, but I'm leaving it running anyway.

I don't see anywhere on the hardware support page to get help: though I'm probably just missing something obvious.

Alright: just received a replacement from Amazon, and the same issue occurs (though, thankfully the audio isn't deafeningly loud at 0 volume).  I don't understand what could be causing this: I assumed it was just a defective headset before, but apparently it wasn't.  I'll try calling the Tech Support number soon and will post again with what gets found out.

I'm getting that on MUF apps.  Why is there no mute for the pop-up volume indicator?  I have to go to the Settings charm to see one?  But if I use a Mute option (anywhere else) then the Volume slider will show an X at the bottom.

FWIW my bigger problem is that there are so few clues about what Audio is doing and little happens automatically that using it as a whole, not just the LX-3000, seems very much hit or miss, especially when it comes to Recording, e.g. using its boom microphone (which I want to be sure that I am using optimally for Speech Recognition.)

So rather than think that there is a problem with the headset I think we should be trying to understand what all the OS allows us to do about it.  Take a look at how it appears in Volume Mixer for example.  At least the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons appear to be recognized there, as well as on the Volume pop-up indicator.  Etc.

Also, what are you doing about your other Playback devices when you are testing the LX-3000?
