microsoft is not a valid short file name

Hi my name is Kenya and I am trying to install AutoCAD Civil 3D; however, I get two error messages, Error 1314. The specified path %appdata%\AutoCAD\ is not unavailable and the second message is error 1325: Microsoft is not a valid short file name.  I was told to go to Microsoft and download the free Windows Installer Clean Up tool.  I think I may have found it, but it said that it was for office suites 2003, 2007, or 2010(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) and every time I try to run the program I get a error message that says Microsoft is not a valid short file name, am I using the correct program?

Answer

Hi,

·         Have you tried the steps suggested by ‘Syed’ to your pervious posts?

The article that you have referred to does not have the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility tool any more, it has been retired by Microsoft as it may damage other components and should not be used.. If you have pervious installations of AutoCAD you may uninstall the same and then try installing the newer version.

Method 1:

First try removing the application from Programs and Features from within Control Panel.

Method 2:

Step 1:

Delete the application folder from Program Files.

Location: C:\Program Files\

Step 2:

Delete the application folder from Common Files.

Location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\

Step 3:

Delete the application entries from Registry.

a)      Go to start and type regedit.exe.

b)      Browse to the below given location and delete the folder

Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AutoCAD

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

“Back up registry”: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

Once you have uninstalled the application completely try to re-install the same and check what happens.

Also, if the suggestions do not work or if you have anything to update do use the same thread instead of creating a new post.

Hope this information is helpful.
